awesome lead find?
so searching online i found an old sailboat for sale (dirt cheap), details online say the keel is 1800 lbs of solid lead. if everything works out i will be bringing it home. Then the long chore of splitting it up.
After calling EVERY tire shop with in 50 miles of me and no luck of getting wheel weights this is my next hope.

A great find for sure. The trick is in hauling & cutting it into manageable chunks. Many claim an old chains saw is the easiest & fastest method.

Lead poisoning much? That will distribute lead slivers across a large area.
I would probably just melt off hunks with Ox/A torch.

we used a portable circular wood saw, then just swept up the 'lead dust' and put it in a seperate container so as not to put it to waste.
worked great!

LOL. Congrats on the find, hope it all works out for you. How much is this haul going to cost?

You have it backwards. The idea of the chain saw is it cuts large bites & large slivers of lead & doesn't bind up. The "dust" is too large to inhale w/ just a particle mask on. Now burning lead w/ a torch, a sure way to get lead fume poisening. Lead vaporizes @ about 1600-1700deg so a torch (3500deg) is going to vaporize it. Besides, it takes forever to cut lead like that with a torch IMO.

Cripes... has it come to this? Buying boats to get lead? What a world! Hopefully the keel can be replaced with some substitute and resold or used. It would have to be a really "cheap" boat for this to work out.

Good idea. I submit that any saw, power or hand, should work fine.
