Disposing of Mis-fired Rounds
How does one dispose of mis-fired rounds?
I bought two new 12 round mags for my XD 357. They are for the XD 40 though but should work fine, the springs are tight. I have keep them fully loaded for a few days now and are starting to loosen up. It looks like I could file the front of the mag down and that would fix the problem. As the slide is released the lip of the case is catching the edge of the mag and holding the bullet in a flat horz position as the slide catches. So the bullet is pressed into the feedramp. I have two rounds which FTF and the bullet was pressed back into the case about a 1/8th of an inch or more. I'm not going to shoot them but how do you dispose of rounds like this or any other bad ammo?
I'm not sure you just throw them away, do you?
Thanks,

I use an inertia hammer to pull them apart, but if you don't have one of those - or are nervous about using one - I'd try to give them to a range master or dealer and allow them to properly dispose of it.
You're absolutely correct in not firing those rounds, the increase in pressure could cause some serious problems.

As stated, if you don't want to pull them, you can bring them to a local PD and ask them to dispose of them for you.

Thanks good to know. I'll take them to the range later this week and see if they will take them.

So...the next obvious question is: when you take misfires to a PD, a range, or a dealer to be correctly disposed of, how do they dispose of 'em? (which is to say: what exactly is correct disposal of ammunition)?

Another option for disposal is to just give them to a friend who does some reloading. He will know how to separate the components (bullet, powder, case) using a bullet puller, or the inertial hammer that Trader mentioned above (available for about $14 anyplace that sells reloading supplies).
In my estimation, this is the proper method as he is likely to re-use the components (if he loads that caliber), and he has some experience dealing with powder, primers, and lead.
Once removed from the case, the powder can be disposed of by simply adding it to an outdoor fire, so long as it is only a very small amount. The primer can be temporarily deactivated by soaking it (still in the case) in some WD40. Once it dries out, the primer may again become active. ***Attempting to remove the primer from the case is not recommended. It can be done, but is it not exactly a safe practice.***
If you MUST dispose of a piece of primed brass, I recommend tossing it on the same fire that you used to burn the powder, but know this: the primer will "explode" much like a firecracker, and it could send a hot coal or a hot piece of brass out to burn any bystander. Put it in the fire and keep others AWAY while staying away yourself. sab

Why not feed it by hand and shoot them?? compressed bullets don't harm anything. If I use american made ammo in my PA63, the same thing happens. So I feed it in by hand shoot them......

Does "misfired" mean that the primer failed to ignite?? I will usually try to fire them again.

Throw them in the ocean, lake, river or the Grand Canyon.
Go to the desert and hide em under a rock.
Flip them into Niagra Falls........
