When I shot .40 my favorite load was the Remington 165 gr. Golden Saber for its combination of energy, momentum and penetration. Recoil might be a tad higher but not really noticeable to me. It covers all the bases. I also used the same bullet in a lot of my handloads. 
I'm surprised that no one has posted a link to the "approved" list yet.

I carry these...
they always cycle through the gun without any issues and i like the way they expand.
