Keyholes

This is a discussion on Keyholes within the The Ammo Can forums, part of the Armory Talk category; Is there something with ammo that would cause "keyhole" holes in the target instead of the standard round hole? Or better question yet, is there ...

Keyholes

Is there something with ammo that would cause "keyhole" holes in the target instead of the standard round hole?

Or better question yet, is there something that can be done while shooting that would cause it ? (Bad grip, etc)?

I was at the range a few weeks ago, had brought 200 rounds of Fiocchi 124gr 9mm and my Beretta M9.

My girlfriend's target looked extremely odd, with the keyholes all over it, while mine looked perfectly fine!

She was using a different box of ammo than I was , so I can't say specifically if it was due to her shooting style or the ammo itself.

Any input would be appreciated!

Were you both using the same brand? I was told before that those are due to a weak round. The bullet tumbles at it travels.

Yes, we were both using the Fiocchi rounds!

Come to think about it though, I saw the same thing with my XD-45 the first time I shot it... But that first time was straight from the gun shop, didn't even clean it first (yeah, I was impatient!). That was WWB ammo..

If the bullet does not catch the rifliing in your barrel or catches it a a very off angle then it will tumble. I can't see how low power loads would cause this. I have shot .40 180 gr bullets as low as 700fps with no key holes. Once the bullet comes out of the barrel spinning it doesn't matter if it's going 1000fps or 700 fps it's still spinning at what ever the rifeling in the barrel is.
