Cartridge ID Help

My son found an old fired brass cartridge in the woods today. I've never heard of it so I was wondering if any one here can give me some info on it. The head stamp reads 38-55 S U.M.C. then either an H or a 4. It looks fairly old but is a center fire. Thanks.

It's from some old lever rifle in .38-55 Winchester; UMC is Union Metallic Cartridge, AKA Remington.

The S and the H stand for "Solid Head"--they type of bullet used.

Loaded, it would have looked something like this one: http://www.gunauction.com/buy/100567...s.h.-headstamp

I knew Cuda would get it without a picture. 30 minutes. Not bad!
