Black Hills usually uses someone else's bullets in their loads. They use both the XTP and the Barnes Tac-X, among others.
Between the two, I'd go with the Barnes loads; iirc, their price is cheaper than Cor-Bon (remember in pricing, BH comes in 50-rd boxes; CB in 20). However, the XTP is nothing to sneeze at either; they just tend to have less expansion than modern designs.
And I think Black Hills makes top-notch ammo. I love their match grade rifle loads in .223 and .308...and I miss when you could buy their reloaded blue box .223 with premium bullets for $8.99/50...slightly cheaper for plain old FMJ...

Yeah I think the Barnes would be fun to try out. I had heard that buffalo bore was loading the Barnes as well. That might be fun, they always crank everything up.

Honestly...BB and DT just don't impress me, at least for most of their defensive loads (their standard pressure .38spl loads, and the .44 special PD wadcutter loads are exceptions). Maybe it's because I don't get all lubed up over velocity/energy; why have the additional recoil for a bullet which does nothing more, terminal-effectiveness wise?

It's not that it makes a difference. It is just fun to shoot. Does a muscle car get you someplace more effective than a sedan? Not if your following the law. But it is more fun in the muscle car. 😃 I threw buffalo bore out there cause sometimes I find it pretty cheap.

For range shooting it doesn't make a difference. For self defense it does. You want to be able to shoot as fast as you can put rounds in to the target and the extra muzzle blast and recoil is a minus in that situation.

With the exception of the .45. Heavier slower bullets penetrate better.
But thats only because the petals on the .45 are so big it slows it down quicker.

Just curious, but is it a bad idea to load the magazine with different rounds? So, bullet 1: Critical duty, bullet 2: critical defense, bullet 3: Hydra-shok, bullet 4: fmj, etc.

Why? Load the mag with HST or Gold Dots or PDX. Why mix.

Just figured if I'm ever shooting at an actual person I'll be so panicky that I'd want the best of all options so after the gun was empty he'd be left there and I could go home to change my shorts...
