38 spl lead bullet loads
Does any one have any suggestions on a good place to start. I have a bunch of brass, Federal #100 primers, Missouri bullet Company 158gr lead cast bullets. Any suggestions on powder, and how much? I have $270 in enough stuff to load 4000 rounds less powder. So its kinda hard not to. Another $100 in powder will finish off the supplies.

I've been running 3.4 gr Solo 1000 with 160 gr LRN. Soft shooting load that makes 114 power factor for IDPA.

If you are getting into reloading, you need to buy a reloading manual. Lyman has a good one.

^^^^^ What he said. Lyman's #49 is a must have for potential reloaders. In it you'll find powder and primer recommendations and specific bullet/powder loads. It'll be your "Bible".

I have a Nosler 6 and I could start buying powder Just thought I would see it any one had exceptionally good luck with one particular powder with that primer and lead. Nosler said HS6 at 5.9 gr was the most accurate with their 158gr jacketed Hollow point. But will it be the best with unjacketed lead?

For me, I use MBC's SWC 158 gr. with CCI 500 primers, and 3 different powders.
2400- I started with 6.8 grs and worked up to 7.5 grs. 7.5 is my most accurate with my 38's with this powder.
Bullseye- started at 3.2 grs. and found 3.6 grs. to be the best load with this powder.
Unique- started at 3.9 and found 4.3 to be the most accurate with both the S&W Mod 66 snubby and 642. With the GP100 6" I found 5.0 grs. to be the most accurate.
Hope this helps, just use safe starting point and then test and test over and over.

If you are just starting, tough to go wrong w/ Unique. It give great lead bullet accuracy & good loft, medium burn rate pressure curve, just doesn't meter as nice as some others.

I have been using Unique. Accurate and soft shooting. I've been shooting them in my Model 37-2 Airweight.
I've played a little with Bullseye. My loads had a little more pep and definitely heated up the pistol more than the loads with Unique. I haven't given up on the Bullseye but Unique is my primary powder for 38 Special 158 LSWC at this time.
Just a note. If you want some great plinkers try some 148 LHBWC and Bullseye. They are UGLY but ACCURATE.

While I use unique for some things, i don't recommend it for a beginner. It is just too hard to meter. Try W231/HP38
I use 4.0- 4.3 Grains 231 with that same bullet.
Out of a 4" model 10
4.3 averages 780 FPS
Hope this helps
