Self/Home Defense Ammo

I'm looking to the experts on the forum to give me some advice. I have a Sig 1911 Scorpion, XDm 9mm and I just bought a S&W M&P Shield 9mm. I am not an expert on ammunition by any stretch of the imagination so I am wondering what I should keep loaded for self and home defense. I keep the XDm loaded with a shotgun accessible for home defense. I like to keep the 1911 loaded and ready just in case and I plan on keeping the Shield on my person or in my car and I need to know what I should look for when choosing a good ammunition to load.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Speer Gold Dot 147 Jhp or 124+p Jhp, Or Federal HST in 147 Jhp
Either of these are good choices for penetration and expansion

Here is the best place place for most of your ammo questions

Get the heaviest grain you can. 147gr for 9mm 230 gr for .45. Buy a couple boxes of all the majors Federal Hydroshock, Winchester Ranger, Hornady critical defense, Speer. Take them to the range and give each one its own target for each gun. See what you go the best with. Use that. If you have any FTF, FTE, miss fires, or miss feeds then automatically count that ammo out.

I disagree with tcx xdm about just getting ammo and if there is a problem not using it First break in the pistols with a couple hundred rounds of ball ammo. Then after everything has worn in and the guns are working well you can start thinking about finding ammo that feeds and shoots well. In 45 I like the 185 gr jhp bullets. Also some pistols are designed to shoot one bullet weight at point of aim (early gp100s Springfield emp some others) read you paperwork. Also what works well in one weapon might not be the best choice for other weapons of the same caliber. In a 2 in chief 38 spl. A 125 jhp might be a better choice than a 140 jhp. The same might not be true with a longer barrel 6in L frame. Same with semiauto pistols.

Speer Gold dot 124+p for me. Whatever you chose shoot a bunch through your gun to make sure it feeds okay.
