how similair are rangers and hsts?
well i hate to say it but my xdm 45 absolutely hates 230 gr. rangers. my gun absolutely refuses to load them and i need to look into getting other ammo to test out and i know that rangers and hsts are very similair bullet designs, and i was wondering would i just be wasting time and money if i ordered a box of hsts, since there very similair bullets?

Of the Ranger T 230gr, are you using the standard pressure or the +p? If you're trying one, then try the other.
Did you run a few hundred rounds of FMJ through your 45 before you tried out the JHP?
As far as the Federal HST's are concerned, they seem to have a deeper hollow point than the Rangers do. They too are standard pressure and +p. Try one, see how it feels/fires, etc. Then try the other.
Other than that, I'm not sure what else to tell you since it looks like there isn't a whole not of variability in weight. Unless you go to the Speer Gold dot. They do have a 200gr .45ACP available. And the Speer is supposed to be just as good as the HST and Ranger T. But good luck finding it.

I think he means bullet profile not design. The HST and T are polar opposites in design. I did not think their profile was that close but I guess I will have to remember to compare them.

i was shooting 230 gr +p rangers, my xdm has only had jhps shot thru it, no fmjs. i am gonna try a box of 230 gr. +p hsts and see if they feed any better in my gun.

Ok, I give you that. While they are both JHP, yes the Ranger has what appears to be a shallower hp, while the HST seems to be deeper. Overall "profile" as you say, probably isn't that different than most other JHPs. But yeah each manufacturer has their own design of their factory ammo.

Also try the non +p ammo, or the Speer 200gr as I stated above. Find what is MOST reliable in your gun and just stock up on that.
P.S. From what I have read, it is a good idea to break in a new barrel with FMJ, BEFORE going to the JHPs. That MIGHT be an issue, but I'm not positive about that.

Thats good to know, I never knew that, thanks. Ill be sure to do that with my new 3.8 45, before trying the HPs. Thanks again for the info!

As I said, I might be mistaken about that. But after reading stuff posted by Cuda and Agalindo, along with others on here and elsewhere, I'd say it's "recommended," though not required to run FMJ first. I'd rather not take that chance, so I'll continue to run a few hundred rounds of FMJ through my guns before I move up to and JHP's.
Again, not sure what is behind the reason to do so. But sometimes, some things do need to have a proper break in period.

the side of the bullet that makes contact with the grooves has no idea what the nose profile looks like. I suspect that the "break in period" has more to do with feeding issues. That being said I use HST's in my Pt 1911 and have not had any feed issues.

I have noted that the HST doesnt clog as easily as the Ranger. The ranger will get clothing caught and stay a FMJ bullet while the HST will still expand. both are non bonded
