What ammo for home defense/carry?

What are you using for home defense/carry in your handguns?

I just picked up a 8 pack of Magsafe Defender 96gr +P 45 ACP. I have read a couple of interesting articles about this particular round and bought 2 packs for a whopping 34 dollars! That's 16 rounds total! Shot one pack at the range and it kicks like a magnum but it cycled every single time it was fired.

I originally was looking for some Speer Gold Dots, but the firearms store had very a limited selection of ammo.

Speer is good and I like Corbon too. But they never have what I want at the gun store (when ever I'm there anyway) so I've just kept regular Walmart Winchester JHP's untill I get some Corbons.

I carry Corbon DPX 115 gr +P in my XD.

They are a solid copper Barnes X Bullet. Tests have shown that they expand very reliably. They keep 100% of their weight. They penetrate very well including hard barrier penetration.

The down side is they are expensive, $22.48 list price for a box of 20. But you can find they online for a little over $18 a box.

I'm sure I'll catch flak for this but you should always carry the highest grain bullet for the caliber you are using. That has been proven at least by the FBI as the most effective method. My fed buddy just a few months ago witnessed a BG shot from a 10' distance three times in the chest with Corbon 115+P and he was realeased to lockup that afternoon. Certainly no weight bullet is fullproof but my bet is on the pros that stake their life on their testing and actual incidents. They all say use the heaviest bullet you can. To each his own. Just sharing some info.

Before Ammolab.com started charging an expensive membership fee I read their findings on a reqular basis. They were quite impressed with the performance of WWB Personal Protection 230-gr .45ACP JHPs. They found it to be better than some much more expensive ammo.

Whenever I run out of Speer GDHP I always feel quite comfortable with the WWB JHP .45 until I can get more Speer.

I don't have a defense magazine full of the same ammo, typicaly two type.
Federal Premium Hyra Shock 165 gr with 230 gr Jacketed every third round, for the XD.

For my conceal carry weapon, I typically test on reliability and accuracy, then load tactically.

I have 2 magazines full of 2 different ammo. I have not shot anyone so I don't know its perfomance :P. Anyway, I carry Federal Premium Hydrashock for the 9mm and I also have a magazine fully loaded with Remington Golden Saber HPJ (124gr).
