Reloading tip for the XD
The XD does not like being short changed on it's cartridge over all length.
Thank you, that is all.

Reloading for .40 S&W. 155gr lead round nose, 3.8gr TiteGroup. Max OAL on the .40 is 1.125. I've loaded up 500 at that length, and they all fired perfectly. My last batch I loaded at 1.112 (155gr bullet being shorter than the 180's, I'm not concerned with overpressurization, especially with such a light load.) Why did I shorten the load? Because the design of the bullet was jamming the shoulder of the bullet into the throat of the barrel -- I shortened it just enough so that the cartridge would drop into the chamber withouth the bullet engaging the rifling. The XD didn't like that. I'll try a different brand of bullet next time. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=943174 That link has a pic of the bullet I was using. You can see a shoulder on the bullet. When seated at max OAL, that shoulder extends past the case mouth, and into the throat of the barrel. It's no big deal, but I decided to experiment with it anyway. The jams that occured (only jams ever with my XD40SC) were exactly the same every time, and were what one would expect from a cartridge that would prefer to be longer. Did I explain clearly enough? I feel like maybe I made things more confusing than they needed to be. Anyway, sorry about the vague statement earlier. It sounded better in my head when I posted it. :P

My 45 seems to like an OAL of 1.260.

I've shot 150rds of my reloads in my XD45 with an OAL of 1.220" with no problems at all. XD ate them and asked for more! The load was using Nosler 185g JHPs with 6.0g of 231 powder.

Well maybe then the short-OAL jam is a .40 specific thing. All I know is I'll be loading what I know works from now on -- 1.125 as per the manual.

I load 180gr rnfp/hp Rainier in .840 cases at a 1.125 OAL. Feeds great.
Now my Remington 155 hp loaded in the same case at the same OAL will jam at the feed ramp about 30% of the time. Looks like its catching on the crimp. I use a taper crimp to .426 ish on both. Any clue to this problem?
