IPSC Min Load formula

FYI:

Came across an interesting load limit for IPSC that I use for production class

4.2 grains of Winchester 231
180 Grain Montana Gold
1.125 OAL.

Gives a 135 Powerfactor.. However, if you drop the powder to 4.1 grains, you start to get stovepipes (Not a single one on 4K rounds of 4.2 grains)

I tried to drop it .1 Grain to get closer to the 125 PF but it started to act up on me (3 stovepipes in 50 rounds)

130-135 is a good range to be in, since temperature, etc can fluctuate the PF.

Yeah.. I was trying to drop it to 130 (seeing as when it gets cold we shoot indoors so the temps to not vary that much ) but it looks like the factory springs didn't like it that light (and I can't change them due to production rules). the 135 is a nice load as it stands.

If you are shooting under USPSA rules, changing springs should fall under Appendix US D9 21.4: Action work to enhance reliability (throating, trigger work, etc.) is allowed.
I'm shooting under Canadian IPSC rules, and there are NO changes allowed to the "off the shelf" gun other then grip tape, and a trigger job (but has to be factory parts)

That seems to be a common problem when using the 40 short & weak for Production. Even in the US, shooters are having trouble getting below 135 even with changing springs because then the barrel doesn't want to lock up right. A 9MM & 147gr bullets will let you go as close to 125 as you want to be.
