New to reload.. Just a few questions

I have decided that I will reload (9MM). I have never done any type of reload before so this will be new to me. From the reseach I have done I will be using the Lee hand press, since I only shoot about 200 rounds a month. I will be using CCI primer (small pistol) since it's easy for me to get and I've heard good review. My question is, can the CCI primer be used with any brand of 9MM brass? Such as Federal, RWS, Remington UMC. MFS? These are mostly what I have laying around. So far I narrow it down to Montana Gold 115 Gr FMJ, CCI primer and random once fired brass. I can't seem to figured out what powder I should be using in this combo.

I would get a good reloading manual @ the least (not LEE), & read it twice, then decide on what gear. IMO, the Lee hand press is for the guy that has way too much time & can be a frustrating way to load 200rds of anything. A cheap Lee single stage press is a far better tool for the job & not much more money.
Powders for noob reloaders start w/ Unqiue & go slower IMO. If you are using the Lee dippers, Unique, WSF or W231 will be great choices. Look into Precision Delta for cheapest FMJ. I like MG bullets, but they are not as cheap for plinking loads.

get a lee turret... it doesn't matter that you load 200/month, the cost difference with a single stage press is insignificant and changing dies can get old quickly...

just make sure to avoid some military brass that have crimped primers...

a hand tool for priming is not only dangerous (IMO) but also slow...

imagine 100 primers blowing up 2 inches from your hand... it will cost you a trip to an ER if not more...

at least with a press primer, if it blows up, it's just equipment to replace...

the lee classic turret has a nice feature that if your seating the primer and it blows up, then only that primer goes bang...

honestly why are you reloading 9mm if you only shoot that much... you only save 3-4 cents per round...

if you even think you will be shooting any more, get the turret...

I started reloading with a loadmaster and don't regret it... (vs starting with a single stage primer)

my loadmaster can do single stage when needed (I've never seen the need)

If anyone is blowing up primers they are doing something wrong. I have never blown a primer.

Hand press is not recommended to use for 200 rounds a month. Get a single stage press for your bench.

A hand priming tool is safe to use, just wear safety glasses when priming. You can prime 200 cases in 30 minutes with a lee hand primer after you resize and deprime the cases in a seperate opperation process.

The Lee Classic Turret is a great suggestion, a very nice press. I reload 9mm for about half of what cheap walmart ammo costs. I've primed quite a few cases with a hand primer and never had one blow up, it's kind of weird that you think they're dangerous. I've never heard of an accident using one.

RCBS hand priming tool blew up in my hand - THR

Granted it is rare and it seems to happen with soft federal primers.

But my hands earn my paycheck.... And there is no way i risk them even if its likely not to happen.

And if they are safe why bother with safety glasses?

at least with a press primer, if it blows up, it's just equipment to replace... This just doesn't happen. Primers are sensative, but not dangerous to handle. I have hand primed on 3 diff units for some 30yrs. In some 150K+ rounds on two progressives, never had a primer go bang, never.

if you even think you will be shooting any more, get the turret...

Sort of. I admit, anything could happen, but if I lived my life that way, I would never leave the house. It just doesn't happen, Federal or not. BTW Rayieko2, 200 cases can be hand primed in about 10min w/o hurrying w/ any of the tools.

If you are only going to reload 9mm you may want to look into the Dillon Square Deal. It can be ordered setup for 9mm. Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders_

Silver,

Keep the hand press and learn to use each die with consistency. You will learn alot by adjusting the dies to your liking and your weapon's taste. 9mm is a great round to learn to reload and start with. True, 9mm is cheap, but learning to reload it is a great start. Any of the brass you listed is fine as well. As far as powders, go to the mfg websites for load data. It's free and they have some good plinking loads. Hogdon has load data for their powders which includes Winchester. My favorite pistol all around powder, Winchester 231.

Hope this helps!

Each to his own.

There are things i dont risk as the price is too high when other options exist. Your reply is extremist and shows inability to respect others opinions.

Your loadmaster is a doorstop likely because you dont know how to make it work or just impatient. Its not perfect but my loads are just as good as your more expensive press if not better since i pay attention to what i do.

The press works fine for my needs but youre entitled to your opinion assuming you actually owned one.
