I've thought about the same thing, my only worry would be fail to feed. If i wasn't so lazy I would try it out at the range.

Quality HPs are designed to penetrate car sheet metal, car glass, plywood, and wall board and still penetrate a minimum 12" into a bad guy so what's the point of fmjs?

Just had to add... A lot of people think that an HP will hit car glass or other barrier and will expand before hitting the bad guy. This is not true the HP will not expand until it hits tissue.

Every HP round I have put into a hard barrier has pancaked every time, all of them. We have done this thousands of times on the LE range.

You should be familiar with the IWB/FBI protocol. All LE ammo has to pass intermediate barriers tests. It's shot through sheet metal representing a car door, car glass at a 45deg angle, heavy clothing, wall board and plywood.

What dept do you work for?

The FBI report on handgun ballistics from 1989 wasn't very high on HP as far as exspansion goes. Said they only expand 60-70% of the time. Now I know that report is old and ammo has come a long way in the 20+ years since then, but common sense would say that FMJ would penatrate deeper. That being said I still keep my mags loaded with JHP. I was just thought that maybe mixing in would give you the best of both worlds?

Yes HPs would penetrate deeper but will also make a subcaliber hole. 9mm would be around .23 caliber. Modern HPs have come along way from the 60 to 70%. FYI if the round fails to expand then acts much like an FMJ.

Big diff between steel backstop or dirt berm & "hard barrier". JHP don't pancake on auto glass or sheet metal, drywall or wood. They canl deform & the deformation can cause loss of penetration.
To the alternating rounds thing, why? You will have no idea what bullet is up next & compromising a potential faster stop or over penetration if the FMJ if the one that hits (or misses) is the FMJ. Find a good JHP, test fire at least one full mag of each carry mag & shoot those.
