I use Clays for trap and sporting so have loaded some .40 with a 175gr lead, but I have a lot of Clays. We shoot around 5,000 rounds a year at trap and sporting so if it works may just stick with it. Noticed you didn't like it, reason? Thanks for your expertise, I'm a shotgunner mostly.

Clays gets really freaky as you get near max. As I noted earlier, pressures are never linear. So you go along fine & then even 0.1gr increae can push pressure into a spike. Not a good choice in high pressure/small volumn cases like the 9mm or 40. Some guys like Clays in 45, large volumn/low pressure round, but IMO, you are asking for trouble running it in the 40 w/ anything but a low vel load (bunnyfart, mousefart or gamer) .

Accurate 2 is also a very good powder. My 40 cycles perflectly with the start loads on Berrys and Hornady bullets.

Just a note, AA#2 is right in there w/ powders I label "uberfast". Anything much faster than W231. Yes, it will run in te 40, but again, not a good choice for the same reason I don't like TG; low volumn & steep pressure curve. Clays at elast offers a high ovlumn per charge wt, so little chance of a dbl or missing a non charge. Fine for running low vel loads but don't push for factory vel w/ it or any other uberfast powder.

If you wanted to load it up fairly hot with 180gr xtp or the like, what powder would be best for temp, pressure and velocity?

You can easily get 1000fps w/ several powders: HS6, AA#7, PowerPistol, BlueDot, Longshot. You can just get there w/ Unique & WSF. I am a big fan of LS for the 357sig, 40 & 10mm. You can get to 1000fps, a full power load, & still have pressure room to spare. You can see that @ less than 7gr, you are well off max & that is a nice margin of error to have. You can see how TG or sim burn rate powder can't even get there within safe pressure limits. Hravy bullets in the 40, you need to be running slower powders IMO. http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

Ramshot has two powders that are very well suited to the .40 S&W as well. True Blue and Silhouette. In fact Silhouette is formerly known as Winchester Action Pistol and I believe it is the powder that Winchester developed .40 S&W loads with. Silhouette has a flash inhibitor as well. True Blue is capable of some very fine accuracy in .40 S&W and meters like fine sand. Both are slower burners for the .40 S&W.

I'm off to Sportsmans tomorrow, thanks for the info. I will offer a range report as soon as the weather turns decent.A pound of longshot and a pound of silhouette. I added grip tape to the sc and it feels 100% better.
