Why does this brass look strange?

So I policed up all my spent brass at the range the other day and had to cull some of it from the shooter next to me. They are dark, with a rainbow patina near the top, reloaded (all different head stamps) 9mm cases. A few were ruptured near the base.
Now I reload, however I've never seen fired brass with these dark carbon lines running down the case. Anyone seen this or know what causes it? And is that guy lucky to still have his hands?

They were fired from a pistol with a fluted chamber. Most likely an H&K.

Interesting, does a fluted chamber shorten brass life? ...these all had low base bulges and were trashed.

It's not so much the fluted chamber, the case isn't fully supported, which caused the cases to rupture near the case head.

The fluting is definitely what you'd see out of an HK; either a P7-series pistol or an HK94 carbine/MP5 subgun (and variants).

Both, iirc, have supported chambers, however...more likely old brass/hot load/combo of the two.

Thanks. Learned something new. "This pistol left unique marks on the brass because of its fluted chamber. The fluted chamber is designed to increase reliability. HK states that, "… the P7 pistol will extract and eject an empty shell even if the extractor is missing." ".... The only possible drawback we can see with a fluted chamber is that it may prevent you from reloading the brass, but we think the increase in reliability is worth it."

The lines wouldn't worry me . . . but if some of the brass is ruptured near the base, then yes I would be VERY concerned....

We've reloaded .308 shot from an HK the marks on the case are not very deep. On the pic posted I can clearly see at least on case head that has ruptured. I would worry about the case head swelling more than the fluting.

I too have reloaded cases fired in fluted chambers. It does shorten brass life a bit, the flutes form a stress fracture line after the first firing. Like scoring a piece of glass before breaking it. I would still reload it, but in 40, I would not load major loads in that brass.

I wouldn't worry too much about finding it in .40, Fred...not very many P7M10's or MP5/40's running around out there.
