Self defense ammo....

Okay, I am looking to see what other people are using as their primary defense ammo, and their normal range ammo for the XD .40, or anything else. I know there are a lot of choices out there for SD ammo, and I am not sure which would benefit me the most. So tell me what ya use...

I don't have my firearm chambered in .40 a really good friend does and we shoot together all the time.

Normally I will shoot Federal 9mm from Walmart at the range, but I carry Hornady Critical Defense in 9mm

He normally shoots federal at the range as well from walmart, and I believe he is carrying some Federal Hydrashock Tacticals right now in one mag and Speer Gold Dot in another.

I have corbon dpx and ranger bonded. I can get the ranger so cheap I often use it at the range, but those are the top two in my mind, corbon being top. Make sure its the DPX. I have an XD40 Service.

I'm a huge fan of Doubletap's Bonded Defense rounds (Speer Gold Dot bullets). I haven't had a chance to test their 9mm yet, but their 38 special penetrates as much as the average 357 hp, with typical 38 recoil. Their 357 rounds are BEASTS. Plus Mike (owner) is really quick to answers questions/emails. Amazing service, amazing products, and great prices..

Double Tap exaggerates on their published velocities. There's a test posted hear where standard pressure ammo performed better than DT. Corbon being the "best" is an opinion one with which I don't agree. I've also posted IWBA conducted test of HST out performing corbon.

Any of the ammo listed below will work just fine for you. Make sure you try it out and that it functions reliably in your gun and that it's accurate also. I personally lean towards the heaver 180gr.

.40 S&W:
Barnes XPB 140 & 155 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Speer Gold Dot 155 gr JHP
Federal Tactical 165 gr JHP (LE40T3)
Winchester Ranger-T 165 gr JHP (RA40TA)
Winchester Partition Gold 165 gr JHP (RA401P)
Federal HST 180 gr JHP (P40HST1)
Federal Tactical 180 gr JHP (LE40T1)
Remington Golden Saber 180 gr JHP (GS40SWB)
Speer Gold Dot 180 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 180 gr JHP (RA40T)
Winchester 180 gr bonded JHP (RA40B/Q4355/S40SWPDB1)

HA! If you get the Speer GD, I understand they were letting ammo out that was NOT loaded w/ SGD.
Any of the majors JHP will perform fine; HST, Ranger, RGS, SGD, just buy a box & make sure it feeds in your gun.

I have Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX1 180 gr. for self defense .40 ammo. For range I just use the cheap Federal ammo from Wally World.

I carry with PDX1 as well....a descendant of the Black Talon round. Shoots and cycles very consistently too.

I carry Gold Dots in my 9mm and Federal HST's in my .40. I would probably carry HST in my 9mm if I could find it in stock anywhere. But I'm confident in both.
