I mostly shoot outside, so I pick up my brass after every couple mags or if I switch guns. The only exception is my LCP, which I just shoot until I'm done with it then look for the brass afterwards, since it throws the brass ALL over the place and end up losing more than half of it anyway. Just the other day when the snow melted I found a whole crap load of 380 brass since the grass is dead. I found some like 50 ft behind where I normally shoot. I wish it was more consistent about where it threw my brass.

I bought one of these. Yes, it looks stupid and is a bit awkward at times, but once you get it tweaked, it works fairly well:
With the 1911 & the XD, it catches about 80%. With the CZ, about 60%. Still more tweaking reqd.
I generally clean my area as best I can before I start shooting. With the silly looking catcher, most of the brass that it misses is at my feet or on the bench.

Just don't be the "Brass Scrounger" at your range. We all know the type. Looks like a chicken pecking everywhere. Waiting for your next casing to land near him so he can gobble it up...
and you rarely ever see him actually shoot anything!

fred, I agree with this, the problem is now that the indoor ranges in Florida are getting peed off when you take even your own spent brass because they are selling it and making a killing, and they don't even have to sort it, if they sort it, they make even more. The one range owner I know makes enough money selling brass that it pays for most of the bills for the range to operate.
