XDm 3.8 40, good defence round?

i got a 3.8, 40 bi-tone a couple months ago and absolutely love it! its my first hand gun but it didn't take me long to get hooked. i have taken it to the range several times and i mostly have been using Winchester 165 grain FMJ. The gun seems to shoot them just fine, so far no jambs of any sort with at least 300 rounds so far. So unless y'all have other suggestions, i was going to stick with that. I would like to find something a little cheaper though
Now to the question. Im looking for a good self defense round. What do y'all recommend getting, and where do recommend i get it from? Thanks!

I carry Hornady Critical Defense in my XD40. Just for shooting every weekend, I shoot the $13 federal fmj from walmart.

get some proven performers. Gold Dots, Ranger T's, HST. 165 or 180gr.

Stick with a 165 gr round, better transfer. Other than that +1 gold dots

Hornady CD has had problems with feeding. Make sure you really test it out before you use it. It's had issues.

Other than that. Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX1 .40 is what the FBI uses as standard issue. And that's what Carry in my 9mm. That or Ranger SXT 147 gr.. But you should check out the Ammo Can in this forum for all your questions about ammo.

Gold dots, HST's, Ranger-T's are probably the top three. Just make sure to try various options to make sure they function well in YOUR weapon. Some weapons just have issues with a particular make of round.

I've never had any issues with any rounds I shot in the XD's I've owned, .45 service, .40 service, 9sc. Some have reported issues with HST's in .45's, but mine ate them without issue.

As far as practice ammo I go with the cheapest I can find. Some maybe dirtier, than others, but cleaning your weapon after shooting solves that problem.

I shoot mostly Federal from Wally World at the range, along with my cast reloads. I just picked up some gold dots and tested a box. Functioned great. A lot of the police in this area use them too. So I keep a mag of gold dots loaded up at home.
