In determining the "best" personal defense ammo, there are many factors to consider. First of all in picking the best pd ammo for "you", your weapon is a big factor. It has already been mentioned but, some weapons are ammo finicky. As for my XDM's I have not found a single ammo that they will not cycle reliably to date. Another factor for your carry ammo is your climate and time of year. For cold climate and winter carry where penetration of heavier clothing and jackets is a factor, a jhp or hollow point is often not the best ammo to carry. JHP and HP ammo is easily clogged by heavy clothing robbing you of the expansion that you payed hard earned money for. So consider your circumstances and situation. For winter and colder climates where the heavier clothing is a factor, I would suggest either pow'r ball or glaser rounds because they have polymer tips to help with expansion and keep the bullet from clogging. IMO, Winchester's Supreme Elite PDX1 is the best HP ammo on the market. The bonding gives the ammo a consistent and controlled expansion every time(very impressive). Also another type of ammo to consider is fragmentation ammo(frangible). There is a lot of cheap frangible(crap) out there so don't be fooled by impostors. I personally prefer RBCD's frangible ammo to any because, its a good ammo year around and it has mind blowing energy. Here is a list of reliable PD ammo that I prefer and have personally tested(listed in order of preference)

Fragmentation(frangible)
1.RBCD( My personal choice for PD. RBCD is Amazing, but very expensive)
2.Extreme Shock(fang face,air freedom also amazing)
3.Remington Frangible( baby blue label)
Hollow Point
1.Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX1
2.Winchester Ranger T-Series
3.Hornady TAP (FPD,XTP,CQ)
4.Speer Gold Dot(bonded)
Polymer Tipped Ammo
1.Corbon Glaser
2.Pow'r Ball
3.Hornady Critical Defense

Glasers, and Powerballs are the worst selection for a SD round the powerball has been know to be stopped by heavy clothing and the Glaser will not penetrate the 12" minumum even on bare gel. None of the mall ninja crap like RBCD and EXtreme shock are worth the powder they are loaded with. Never trust you life on prefrags they are worthless.

Modern HP are not very suseptable to having the HP clogged and all the quilty brands are designed to pass IWBA and FBI protocals when being shot through bare gel, heavy clothing, wall board, car glass and car metal. If they did get cloged up they would act like a FMJ and still penetrate the require minumum of 12".

Hornady CD, Powerball and Glaser will underpenetrate every time. None of these rounds meed FBI or IWBA protocol.

The Mall Ninja RBCD and Extreme Shock worhless.

Couldn't have said it better.

I woudn't carry RBCD, Glaser, or PowRBall if you paid me to, period.

Only mall ninjas and folks who know nothing of terminal ballistics hold these rounds with any esteem.

im personally running handloaded golden saber .40 S&W. We test shot it through cardboard, water, etc and recovered a round. Awesome expansion of the bullet. out case stay intact but flares out along the lines on the side. Here is a link to the site. They are factory loads where as mine are handloads

Do explain? are you referring to the legality of handloads? pretty sure it's legal either way, not just creating "mankillers" they are simply factory produced products combined to create a cartridge. As for the bullets themselves, the retain alot of mass and shock load..

I love the "mall ninja" analogy. The purpose of frangible ammunition is to not over penetrate and keep from causing collateral damage(someones little daughter) which you already know. I tested RBCD and Extreme Shock on slabs of meat(due to the lack of volunteers who want to be shot) through two layers of denim and i found that they cause massive entry damage with no exit. its fine that you don't care for frangible, but I saw my results and i stand behind them.
