A stumper for you: Alcan-8 Load Data for .45ACP?
I bought out a reloader who's retiring and as part of his stash I got 15# of Alcan-8 powder. It's old, but this guy swore by it as his go-to powder for .45ACP.
So, I'd like to try it for that. If it works, I won't need powder for 37 years, probably.
Only problem is I can't find any reloading info for it. I've searched the web a ton trying to find this, and no dice.
Anybody have any ideas about where I might find this? I've struck out.
PS: It's an unusual powder--square-cut flakes.

What about asking the guy ya got it from? That might get you in the ballpark anyway if the caliber is different.

He said he thought he knew what it was, but it wasn't written down. I just discounted it for the obvious reason--I wasn't going to go on his memory.
But it's a great question.

I've got manuals back to the Speer 10 and don't have data for that powder.

My father used AL-5 and AL-7 for 12 GA. shotgun shell reloading back in the 60's. That is some fairly old powder.

I worked an explosion at the old Alcan plant last year. The St Louis news interviewed me at the end of this clip.

Checked eleven manuals going back to Speer 9 (1974) and Lyman 45th (1970) and none of them list Alcan 8 for the 45 ACP. They have plenty of data for it in magnum calibers, but none in lower pressure cases.
Burning rate falls between Blue Dot and 2400, so I would say it is probably inappropriate for the ol' 45. Save it for high performance shotshell loads and full-power magnum handgun cartridges.

That what my old manuals show as well. I have load data for AL8 in the 41 Magnum, 44 Magnum and even the 44 Special, but that’s all.
IIRC, Alcan’s “go to” powder for the 45 acp was AL5. (similar to Unique.)
