Max length for .45 copper jacketed SWC?

What's the max OAL?
I'm new to reloading and my understanding is that you want some space between the bullet and the "grooves and landings." But I don't know how to determine that length.

Thanks,
UD.

With semiauto handguns the gun feeding the round into the chamber or fitting into the magazine has a lot to do with the OAL.

When I load SWC for my 45 I just try to leave .020 or so of the bullets shoulder above the case.

I had to go to 1.275 OAL to get these things to feed in a glock21. That seems pretty long and leaves a lot of bullet hanging out of the case. Anything shorter then that and the shoulder would hang up on the bottom of the ramp.

Well the lead SWC with 4.2gr titegroup and OAL of 1.225 didn't feed in my new 1911 loaded or my friends XD45. They feed in my 1911 milspec but I stopped shooting that one cause I'm gonna sell it and I don't want to clean it again.

The copper plated SWC with 4.2gr titegroup and OAL of 1.275 fed perfectly in a glock21, my 1911 loaded, and my friends xd45.

Someone at the range told me that the max OAL for a .45acp is 1.273. Is that true?

The next bullets I buy are going to be lead round nose swc. Hopefully I'll be able to run loads closer to the recommended OAL and have no feed problems.

UD.
