Ammunition Choices

I am looking to buy some ammo for my 30-06 and my XD Service 45ACP.

I am looking at Blackhills 180gr TSX for my 30-06
A friend shoots Speer Golddot 230gr JHP

What are some other good premium self defense rounds for 45?

Also I would like any suggestions for 30-06 in 180gr. The expansion tests with the TSX Barnes bullet just looks awesome.

Thanks

I assume you are using the 06 for hunting I use Win Super X 150grn Power Points in my 270win or Rem Cor-Lokt 150grn either one of those in 30-06 should get the job done for whitetail

Hey AKSpraya. Great name and great pic. Wish I had a cool one in front of me right now. We need that dark oil to keep us warm up here in Vermont in the winter.

Just about any of the JHP from the majors in 185gr-230gr wts work in the 45acp. For hunting w/ the 06, kind of depends on what you are hunting. I think the Barnes 180gr a bit "hard" for deer size game, you'll have better results w/ a lighter 150gr or 165gr Barnes. I prefer the Nosler partition for most hunting, but the Barnes in lighter wts works well too. Save the 180gr for elk & moose.

For the 06 I reload all my hunting ammo. I use mostly Nosler bullets. !65 gr in their Accubond for mule deer and elk and Ballistic tips for lighter skinned antalope and also deer. The 165's shoot alittle flater then the 180"s and get the job done at reasonable ranges.

for the .45 I am in the proccess of changing over the the new Hornady SD ammo. However a quality HP from any of the major ammo manufacters should be fine.

Barnes Triple Shocks are awesome bullets but expensive and not really necessary for any type of deer sized game, even your varoius bonded core bullets are a bit much. You would be served well with any 180 grain lead core bullet such as: Remington Core Lokt, Winchester Power Point, Hornady Interlock Spire Point, Boat Tail Spire Point, or SST, Federal Power Shock, Nosler Ballistic Tip or Partition. You could also use the cheaper bonded core stuff like Winchester Power Max, or Federal Fusion. But if you wanna use Triple Shocks go for it, you just don't need them for deer.

When hunting deer size game use the best bullets you can buy. 20 premium bullets cost about $60 at todays prices but if you have 1 tag per year they will last you 20 years as you only need 1 shot per tag. 2 tags per year and they last 10 years. You will spend a lot more on gas to get to your hunting area. I use 150 grain Nosler Partitions and the deer drop in their tracks. I am sure other premium bullets will do the same. Never use cheap bullets, you might miss a trophy and you will never forgive yourself.

The reason I shoot 180gr in my 06 is because with the lighter weights i get very inconsistant groups. The only remedy i have found is to use the 180 bullets. The rifle I shoot has a 1 in 10 rifling and the 180's just work well in it. Do you guys feel that I will just not get proper expansion in whitetail with the TSX or is it just the fact that it is a heavy bullet on a smaller game? I am concerned about making a one shot kill.
