You can't go wrong with Gold Dots, Rangers, or Golden Sabres, whichever shoots best in your firearm.

In comparison to an old version? Pow'RBall has been around for a while and are typically a little lighter (weight) than many common rounds in a given caliber. Here's a review: http://www.handgunsmag.com/ammunition/corbon_1209/

I've shot the 165gr .45ACP +P version at the range through my XD45ACP, although it was through paper rather than water filled jugs, ballistic gel, or coyotes. They certainly had a lot less bark and flash than 200gr +P Gold Dots.
Some folks swear by them - for me they are just another option in the opinionated world of defense ammo.
Your last sentence sums it up perfectly.

What people need to do is stop basing their decisions on opinion and start basing it on Scientific Standardized Ammo tests.
But that being said those tests and how they are conducted is a subject of great debate.

What it comes down to is use what you can afford to practice regularly with
and functions 100% in your Defensive Firearm.

The Aguila IQ. For the .45ACP, its 117 GR hollow point with a muzzle velocity of 1450fps. $6.00 a box of 20, so it doesnt dent the wallet to train with it. I have had excellent expansion in my tests, and my brother sent one through three wet Pittsburgh phone books. It fragments in tissue and soft targets into three pieces, but will not penetrate or fragment in military body armor, but rather closes in on itself. Being so light, it also shaves some weight off of the loaded gun when carrying.
