Best low priced target ammo?

Let's say (hypothetically speaking of course), that a po-dunk gun shop near my home has UMC, Magtech, American Eagle, and Wolf (ugh), all in 230 grn. FMC .45 ACP, all for the same low price. Which do you think is the best? Sorry if I'm being naive, I don't know a whole lot about ammo, I've always had the luxury of my father purchasing ammo cause i would always shoot with him. I'm planning the arrival of my XD-45 ACP by stocking up on ammo.

Do yourself the honor of buying some of each to see which one your gun likes best.

I'm gonna go ahead and veto the purchase of the Wolf though. The whole steel on steel thing worries me. And ammo at that price, just has to be too good to be true. I'm not even sure why i mentioned it.

my previous batch of wolf was just as good as anything else I've shot. This recent batch has some issues which I'm in touch with wolf about.

OEFM is correct though, try several and see what you and your gun like best.

Try them all, normaly..American Eagle will be the lowest powered ammo on the shelf. Not a bad thing for practice sometimes.
UMC is Remington
American Eagle is Federal
Magtech is Magtech
Wolf is junk ammo as far as I'm concerned

I agree with the rest, that you should try a bunch and see what your XD likes..

I wouldnt automatically discount WOLF ammo, though. I had decided against purchasing it for my XD9, and then my father gave me a Cabela's bulk 9mm ammo can as a gift which was filled with 500rds of Wolf.

I have been mixing it into my magazines with my Blazer Brass, and have yet to have a FTF, or FTE with the Wolf or the Blazer Brass. Yes, the Wolf is DIRTY..but its not necessarily awful ammo. YMMV.

I've been using either UMC mega pack or winchester walmart 100 round value pack. Haven't had a problem with either of them, although they are pretty dirty as I have found out after shooting only high quality defense ammo the other day. gun wasn't even dirty after that, and usually it's got crap all over in the barrel.

Well, it's the long term effects of the steel cased ammo that I'm mostly concerned about. I really dont mind dirty rounds either. another reason I dont want the wolf is i am saving spent brass for reloading. And I dont think anyone in their right mind would buy wolf when there is UMC, American Eagle, and Magtech for the same exact price that this gunshop was charging.

For some reason the all of the stores in the area I live in doesn't sell their cheap ammo, cheap. Wally world's WWB was just under 15 dollars for a box of 50. The same goes for most other stores in the area. Sporting goods stores and even meijer (for those of you not from michigan, it's pretty much just like wally world) are all around 14 to 16 dollars a box for the cheap stuff. The only place I have found reasonably priced ammo is some little grandma and grandpa owned gun shop that is opened a whopping 3 or 4 days a week.

If you can, order your ammo online! (All of the following pricing is for .45) I can buy a case of Wolf ammo online for $60, I don't know of anywhere locally that can even come close to that. Wal-Mart is the only local place that has even relatively cheap ammo, about $10/50 cci blazers or $20/100 WWB, but they don't have much of a selection of ammo and that still comes out to $110/500 with tax, where the Wolf is $70/500 with shipping ($40/500 cheaper than anything else). I haven't had any problems with Wolf in my 1911 or my XD. Self defense ammo is much cheaper online as well, I paid $15.xx locally for a box of 20 Magtech Guardian Golds, and I can get them online for $9.xx.

I have been contemplating ordering ammo online, but I still wasnt sure about it. i know you have to pay a flat fee of $20 for hazardous materials handling when you order gun powder or primers online, does the same go for loaded ammunition?
