40 caliber grain choice
Hello to everyone here. I'm new, and just bought an XD-40 4-inch model at a gun show last weekend. I've been itching to shoot it all week, and Saturday I'm planning on a good range session. I want to figure out what shoots best out of my gun, and wanted to get some suggestions before I bought some ammo. I've seen 155 gr. and 180 gr. choices, and wanted to see what your experiences have been on the two. How do they compare to each other. I've got some TAP loaded in it now for carrying, but I'm going to try a few different brands this weekend, and wanted to see what was recommended before spending on a few boxes.
Thanks, Rob |

Welcome to the forum. I like the 180s best. Seem to shoot a little softer.
Let us know how you like it. |

My reloads with 165 at paper targets when out in the desert 180gr FP or HP.
It all depends on what your after, I would just take a visit to your local shop and pick up a couple boxes of 165gr and 180gr in various brands and not book so you can take notes what you like about them. Then the next time you head out just buy that brand. Also for your carry ammo I would through at least 100-150 rounds of it to make sure that it will feed nice without any problems. |

180 grn ammo will provide a smoother recoil than 165 grn. 165 grn ammo on the other hand is a higher velocity ammo. Though I will say, for ****s and giggles I tested the recoil with the DGR and #22 spring on both 165 grn and 180 grn and have found little difference in them. I'm going to say that you should stay with 180 grn if your not used to the recoil like I wasn't. ((ie the 165 grn recoil jerked my wrist so much that I wasn't able to bend my right arm for 3 days after. No joke, but now I'm over that...the muscle built up.))
Then once your used to the .40 180 grn go ahead and switch to the 165 grn so you could have a higher velocity bullet for carry. I for one trust 180 grn more right now untill I've gotten more shooting time in to build up my muscle more. It just so happened that in my case, the muscle that sits by your elbow, that moves the most during recoil, was my weakest. I knew this before though, it's gone out on me on several occations in the past... Check this link out. mcb did a PERFECT job of explaining recoil. http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic....784&highlight=

Winchester White Box (WWB) in 165grain at walmart for practice. I don't like the 180 grain because of recoil. The 165 just feels smoother.

I agree with what most have already written, The heavier bullets do seem to have a more comfortable recoil. But If I was going to the rang for my first time out with a new gun I would take a bunch of different loads and try them all. You might find you like one load better than another or that your particular gun is noticeably more accurate with a particular load. Just for fun get a box of Remington Express 155 HP. The fireball at the muzzle are quite impressive. Have fun and shoot safe. mcb |
