OK Ammo Storage Experts...Need advise here.
I currently store my ammo in military ammo cans, but can't find any now in decent condition and can only get 500+ rounds into a can anyway. Additionally, I store it and the overflow in the factory boxes in a walk in closet upstairs just stacked on the floor. (this is good for temperature control).......However, I live in a rural area of TX and we depend on VFD in the event of a house fire. The joke here is that they have never lost a slab yet!!
Here are my thoughts and questions: I think I would like to relocate my ammo to the garage in some type of container that has/can have wheels, so that if time permitted it could be rolled out of the garage. This is TX and the garage temps can range from 35 degrees to 95 degrees. I am thinking along the lines of a truck tool box with castered wheels. It obviously needs to be able to be locked and needs to be sturdy enough for 5,000 rounds+.
Good idea? Bad idea? Any other idea that might not be quite as expensive
Thanks in advance!!

Get a large plastic ice chest & put some wheels on that. It's insulated so will help w/ temp. control. Add a desic pack & you are ready to roll. The metal cab. is fine, but more expensive & still not insulated for the garage.

Same boat here. I'm wanting to lock up my ammo but I'm going to need a very large fire proof/resistant gun safe. Think of all the ammo and/or guns I could buy with the money for the safe

If you can find them, try to get a 25mm ammo can. They have a seal that is water and air tight. If you are close to a military base, you can get them for free by calling the armory. When we are conducting gunex's we dump the ammo cans over the side when we are done.

I was not aware 95 - 100 degree heat is a problem. I always thought it was drastic changes in temperature in a short period of time.

Use an old chest freezer instead of the tool box

This sounds like a great idea. Many large chests already come with casters, and ice chests are typically waterproof. I wouldn't do plastic though; perhaps an old steel Coleman.
