ammo suitable for indoor defense
I live in an apartment complex, and the thought of ever having to use my gun for defense in here worries me. I would hate to have any bullet travel out of my apartment and into neighboring ones. I know air marshalls use ammunition designed to penetrate soft targets and displace all their energy within, but not go through hard targets.
The only ammunition I have found in my searches is made by extremeshock usa and it was the nytrilium air freedom round. I found videos of these being used, someone shooting a watermelon placed in front of a section of wall they set up. A normal round went through the watermelon and made a slightly larger hole in the rear and then went through the wall. The extremeshock went into the watermelon, and pretty much gutted the thing when it deposited all it's energy within, went through the first layer of wall and from what they say it didn't go through the other side. Anyone have any experience with this or any other ammo like this? My theory is this, I don't want any innocent people to ever be hurt by discharging any firearm. I don't believe it would be a problem having this type of ammo penetrate a body and causing damage to stop a threat. I can tell you this though, I think even if one of your shots didn't penetrate well, it would probably feel like it did and you have more shots left. I do think it would penetrate however after watching that video. I know I have been shot by a paintball gun from about 100 feet away, and it busted my knuckle wide open.. and I've been hit all over my body with them and it hurts like none other. My opinion is this type of ammunition would be a good alternative for house, and especially apartment living where you are closely connected to neighbors. Here is a link to the video of testing someone did with this http://www.stefanidefensivefirearms.com/ex_shock.asp Here is also what the author of the test had to say on the forum that I found this on. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- actually this stuff is designed mainly for home defense where you might need to shoot an intruder but dont want to shoot thru walls and hit your kids in the next room "nytrillium" is just a sort of tradename like plexiglas, lucite, hydrashock, etc its just a copper jacket stuffed with microscopic tungsten flakes which spread like a sandblaster when the jacket ruptures unlike frangiable which needs to fragment it works pretty well on stuff like soft tissue we did some tests with it on water melons and unlike ball ammo that makes a neat hole in the melon, a 2 layer drywall "wall" and a 1/2" sheet of plywood behind that, the ES round was completely contained within the watermelon and completely shredded the front portion of it with the chunks spewed out the front..nothing came out the back and it moved an 18 pound watermelon about 2 feet back as for the difference between the two types of rounds, the "Fang Face" one is crimped and seems to rupture about 5" inside a watermelon the "Air Freedom" is capped with a plastic ball and seems to rupture in about 3" of penetration..it is designed for use by airmarshalls.. both penetrated a 5/16" plexiglass plate which is about the same density as a rib in a bad guy's chest..... when shot into a two layer "wall" (2 sheets of 1/2" drywall separated by a standard 2x4), both rounds penetrate the first layer, dissipate and spray onto the second sheet with little or no penetration beyond when you shoot it at any angle against a steel plate the flakes disburse and it does not ricochette its not for target shooting or shooting thru trees or steel plates or doors where you cant see your target, or for shooting thru bad guys for that matter.. but for transmitting impact into the target and not into the friendlies behind him and if you consider that you prolly wont be shooting it in your house if its not an emergency, 5 rounds should last a lifetime unless you live in a really bad neighborhood.. |

All quality hollowpoint ammo is made to stay in a BG. I wouldnt' trust any prefragmented ammo.

I have some of the "Extreme Shock" ammo and noticed only one complaint. The crimp may not be enough to fully contain the round into the shell. I dropped one reloading my mag after range time and found that it had fallen face first into the solid floor and essentially seated itself backwards about 1/16th of an inch. Although cycling reliably I decided to shoot it since I just couldn't bring myself to rely on it after that....an impressive flash and bit more recoil than some of the 45 Golden Sabres that I have shot.
Caveat: Don't drop these rounds....they are TOO expensive to waste! :P

Extreme Shock is snake-oil. Incredibly expensive, and not worth the money by essentially all accounts....

Don't buy the hype.
Buy a good JHP, or try some Corbon.

So tell me about the hype on this round. From the few things I could find it seemed like a good round for energy transformation and reduction of penetration/ricochet, etc.
I would be interested in anything you have...especially since I hate to fall for a snake-oil salesman's tactics!

Ditto for the corbon, light bullet at amazing speed and you will get maximun energy transfer. Essentially, if you do not hit bone, almost any bullet will travel through its target and into what may be beyond.
Stick to what most law enforement uses, its proven design. Corbon Gold Dot Hydroshock Winchester Ranger Golden Saber These are all premium threat stoppers.

I have a really hard time finding Corbon and Winchester Ranger, so I normally just go with Hydrashock and Gold Dot. Someone was trying to sell me on the Golden Saber, I haven't tried it yet but would like too.
