Reloads next step

I have been reloading for my XD-40 for about 3 months using Titegroup and BlueDot with both 180g Zero HPs and 165s. I have fired about 1000 rounds with absolutely no problems. I am ready to learn more about this gun and reloading. Several questions; 1. What do I want to be doing to improve my loads for accuracy? I want to move pass trial and error. 2. What is this "set back" business, how do you avoid it, what is the risk and how to avoid it. 3. Reccomendations for a Chrony?

Loads used: 4.7 Titegroup 165g zero WSP
4.7 Titegroup 180g zero and GoldDot WSP
7.8 -8.0 BlueDot 180 zero wsp
All set to OAL 1.125

taking the next step...

I did this a while ago. I found a used chrono, and found the most consistant load. I think mine is a Pact(sp).

Improving for accuracy on pistols isn't as easy as for rifles, if you have a vise, you might find the best load for the pistol, but your not consistant with it, so I suggest you find a set recoil you like.

mine is a mild load, that is really consistant, 6.5 GR of unique with a 155g bullet. the Standard deviation and extreme spread read very well out of my pistol, and its nice to shoot all day. Think it chronoed at around 900-950FPS

I set my oal and forgot about it, I have it written down somewhere. I tested different lengths for feeding reliability, and found the optimum.

"Set back" not sure what it is, never heard of it.

You have a good powder and bullet for good accurate loads, why change?

Tite-group is an excellent powder. Maybe some of the Vhita Vhouri powders burn a little cleaner, but TG is cheaper.

Set back is the bullet moving into the case while it is feeding... Proper crimping (about a .421) on a .40 should do it will prevent this. Set back results in very high CPU (pressure) in the case....With a .40 its bad news as .40 tend to run high pressures. Case separation, blow out, etc.

Do you have a pair of calipers, good ones?

My experiances have been that TG is much cleaner than vit 320. Also much less temp sensitive.

Reloading the next stept

Thanks for the input. In checking my crimp I found the crimp to be .415 which is the same on several factory rounds. I have a fairly good caliper but not digital. Are you sure about the .425 as this is more than case at the bottom.
