Speer Gold Dot ?

I have read what people have been saying about Gold Dots. I was talking to my father and recommended them because his reloads are old and never fired. Since we can't get primers we both are forced to buy manufactered ammo.

Our concerns are I live in an apartment and my father lives next to his daughter. We want a carrtridge that will do maximum damage close quarters but will not go through wall after they hit the target.

I shoot a XD 40 Tactical and my father a 1911 government model.

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you

You can either have a round with good terminal performance or you can have one that doesn't penetrate walls but unfortunately you cannot have both. That's just physics and any claims otherwise are total horse doodoo. Gold Dot has great terminal performance so i would go with that if that's what's available to you.

Agreed, Gold Dots are good. Don't fall for that ninja ammo, glaser, extreme shock, it doesn't perform are advertised and I would never trust the life of my family to it.

as stated many a times, FBI has determined at min 12" of penetration from handgun rounds. that equals guaranteed penetration through lots of various building materials. Helps to "develop" shooting lane/stragety for said situation. Idea is to fire into something hard like a solid wood door, or some other thick item (window AC unit, Toliet, etc)

Good information

I understand exactly what everybody is saying. My father currently has a magazine of hand loads that contain lead bullets. These were loaded when I was a child.

We can't get get primers to reload what we have because of what our lovely politicians have created so I'm trying to convince my father of an alternative.

I hope no one thinks I'm beating a dead horse.
After a hollow point goes through a wall or two, how fast will it loose its velocity?

What you need is a Phaser from Star Trek. But that is not reality. A bullet with sufficient power to bring a stop to a fight will go through several interior walls. The secret is don't miss.

I reload too but you should not use reloads for self defense. It simply gives the attorneys too much mud to sling at you in court.

On the idea of courts and the bullets you use, I have heard that one should use the same (or very similar) ammo that the local LEO uses. This would mean that the lawyers cant even touch the bullet used because it is good enough (safe enough?) for the good guys in the gov't.

That would be fine. Frankly if you use any quality JHP used by law enforcement you would be fine.
