I have never seen new brass split but brass loaded many times for high pressure rounds will do so. You probably picked up an older piece of brass that had been previously reloaded.

Bad piece of brass. I once had a factory Rem. case split upon feeding. The bullet hit the ramp & the case just split. For reloads, the more you reload a case, especially higher pressure rounds rounds, the more it works the brass & makes it brittle. I just shot a box of 44mags up that I loaded 6-7 times & lost 50% to body splits.

You don't become a better shooter unless you can shoot more & you don't shoot more unlesss you can do it for less.

As a reloader I eye ball the brass and the load a number of times. Probably more than I'm aware of. Maybe a quick look at factory rounds is a good idea. I've found reversed primers and no primers over the years.

Have him send the case back to Federal. He'll probably get voucher coupons for a couple free boxes of ammo.
will do

It is a new case, I assure you. I clean the range before we even shoot, they let us keep all the brass. It flew out of his gun and I grabbed it.

I will pass on the advice to him to just send it in and see what they say. It does not worry me much but this is his first handgun so it made him a little nervous the rest of the day.
