Primer Installation Problem

I am a newbie reloader and I am using an RCBS Pro2000 Progressive Reloader with the APS primer system. I have been successfully reloading 9mm for about a month now.

After running out of components for the 9mm I switched over to .40 S&W. It seems that about every four or five rounds the primer gets cocked in the primer pocket. I removed the shell plate and put a casing in each of the slots and it looks like the primer pocket doesn't line up perfectly at each slot. I went out an purchased another shell plate but it is doing the same thing. When the primer is being seated in the casing, you can see that the casing is trying to move outward in the shell plate.

I have been thinking about bending out the spring retainer to allow the casing to float out a little bit.

Does this sound like a good idea? Anybody else ever have this problem before?

Thanks for any and all advice.

What kind of brass? Are you noticing any relationship to the headstamp?

What I'm getting at is perhaps the brass has had the primer crimped. Military brass often has this. It makes for difficult primer seating unless you swage the primer pocket.

I do not know of any crimped 40 S&W but maybe it has old primer sealant.
You can try bending the spring retainer but I would call or e-mail RCBS first to see what they say.
Good luck.

Try using the 9mm shell plate for .40S&W. I use the same shell plate for 9mm, .40S&W, and .38super on both my Dillon machines.

I have been loading Winchester cases and I have cleaned the primer pockets prior to reloading.

.40 cal will not even begin to fit in the 9mm RCBS shell plate.

I will contact RCBS by the end of the week. I just received 2000 9mm bullets from Midway USA so I am going to spend some time on them and put the .40 on the back burner.

Thanks for the advice!
