Hornady TAP

How does the majority feel about the Hornady TAP loads? If you dont feel they are a good carry load, what do you suggest?

Ive currently been trying out some TAP 155grain and like what Ive found, however I would like some more experienced input..

Thanks

Aaron

Pricey for a target load, but CorBon and Tap both feed and shoot great and are the loads that sit in my filled mags.
Plus the black case is very ninja-like. Bonus.

I just started qualifying ammo for new xd-40, tried current choice, 165 golden saber, had 1 ftf (see thd in range tests), so tried some 155 TAP I had (worked fine for the one box I had). For me, two minor issues - judging by expended cases, does not burn as clean as GS, also heard that TAP's do not have sealant on primer/case mouth - maybe contamination issue under adverse conditions. Handling and accuracy seem optimal. In any case, I now intend to visually inspect and fit-check all carry ammo in chamber (trying to simulate what is done for LE ammo).

What interested me in TAPs were the black cases, extremely slick cases and they are supposed to aid in feeding...That and the 155 grain retained 153 grains of weight when fired into a water box...

The accuracy was decent, allthough Im not the most consistant shooter in the world, I blame human error...

On the range, TAP compared to WWB, I noticed less flash, and MUCH less residue/dirt from the TAP...

WWB is so much cheaper though...

I've been comfortable with Hornady's Custom Ammo for personal defense. My understanding is that the TAP line uses the same XTP bullets as the Custom, with the differences being a low-flash powder and black nickel casing coating for the TAP. Maybe for S,G & G I'll pick up some TAP and compare it to their Custom line...

FWIW I hae heard from a fairly accurate source is that the Hornady TAP .223 ammo is basically the same as the Black Hills ballistic tip .223 with out the neat black nickel finish... I know that black hills uses the hornady heads for .223 anyway...

I have not had a chance to test this out yet....

However, I have received some of the once fired .40S&W TAP brass ...

Reloads pretty good... I used both major and monor loads in them with great success...

3.2 grns Clays with 180gr TMJ
4.5gr Titegroup with 155 Moly and jacketed...

both were fun to shoot....

I was given a Hornady test report that lists info on all TAP ammo (pistol/rifle/shotgun) in gelatin (bare, clothed and various barriers).
Here is a sample:

.40 155 gr bare - 12.75" @ .605"
cloth - 14.5" @ .635"
180 gr bare - 13" @ .735"
cloth - 15.5" @ .640"

I hate to type out the whole enchilada, but if you can tell me what your interests are I will be happy to input all pertinent data.

I just purchased a bunch of TAP ammo from cheaper than dirt and they are brass cased .40's and .45's . Not the neato black nickel.

They do use a low flash powder... The velocity is a little lower than their 'custom' ammo. Which i also use.

Im basically only interested in how the TAP .40caliber ammo compares to other personal defence loads...

I think only a select type of TAP comes in the Black Nickel, I have seen both brass and nickel, I know for a fact, every box that Ive bought said FPD(for personal defence) and they were black, I have seen boxes that didnt, and I assume that those only have brass cases...
