99% of retail businesses operate today on what is called JIT (just in time) inventory system, they have enough on the shelves for 24-48 hours max, that's it.
Let a typical grocery store miss one full day of deliveries, let alone two and it would be 80% empty under NORMAL circumstances. Add delivery disruptions and unusual demand to the situation and you better belive there would be serious shortages.
Our local stores will sell out of water, bread and ceral (mostly) in 1/2 day everytime there is a serious ice storm predicted, every time. And that's just on a prediction of bad weather. I'm also not talking a mom and pop operation either, I'm talkin wally world and a major grocery chain.
In a national emergnecy which affected both supply and demand you would absolutley be on your own for food and maybe water for anywhere from a couple days to a few weeks.

++1...Everytime the weather even looks like it's going to snow...look out!...all the bread and milk will be gone...plus we went through a nasty storm a couple years ago took out electric to a lot of people....you couldn't find Ice unless you drove to another state!.....It's like the stock market if you're not in it now...forget it cause when it goes up...you're too late....stock up now...or in an emergency..fergit it!

My WalMart is stocked....sort of.
So I go to Wally World today for the usual trip of essentials. I stop by the firearm section, doubting anything will be there.
To my surprise, WWB 9mm was in stock 100rd bulk packs for $20.
They will only sell me 2 boxes, kinda lame, but at least it's another 200 rounds for the pile.
Then the guy tells me what happened last week. They received 2 PALLETS of WWB 9mm. One guy came in and bought BOTH PALLETS. So now they will only sell 2 boex at a time to their customers.
I mean, i know people want to hoard ammo, but what an a** hole for buying 2 pallets. My friend who owns the local gun shop is having issues finding ammo for his customers. This guy who bought out WalMart is probably selling the stuff at a huge mark-up to whoever he can find.
so I left pissed due to the selfish SOB, but then was thankful I at least got the 200 rounds...bittersweet

At least your Wallys has ammo. I was lucky to pick up the last box of .44 mag yesterday morning. They haven't had all the "popular" ammo for about a month. No 9mm, 357, 44, 22 (in 500 rnd boxes), 40, 380, ect. If I want to drive almost 45 mins, I know of one that has everything I need along with reloading supplies.

Guess what? I know the guy who works the sporting goods counter at your Walmart. I gave him $1100 and he bought me everything they had using his employee discount.
Thanks for the tip!

There's been ammo available at my local WM for a while, though lately .45 is tough to get.
I was down in Dubuque at the gunshop/range Thursday (about 1/2 hour from here), and they were telling me it was virtually impossible to find ammo to sell. When I told them there was ammo where I live, they were on the phone seeing if they still had 9mm in stock; they planned to drive across state borders to buy ammo at retail just so they could have some to sell themselves.
All during this shortage of ammo we've been pretty immune to it. I presume it's because Wisconsin isn't quite the gun state as others are since concealed carry is against the law here.
Even in Dubuque, Iowa it hasn't been too much of a problem, but now it's finally hitting home.
It doesn't affect me because I reload, but as people have indicated getting primers and powder has been problematic for them. I was able to pick up 3000 primers from the gunshop, and 7 pounds of powder, so I'm set for a while--probably until April . I suppose now that stuff will be in a shortage around here.
I think that much of this is related to the economy, not Obama. I think the Obama effect is mostly over by now, and it's people worried about the state of the economy who are driving the ammo shortage. And if things are starting to look up (the stock market is certainly making people feel better this weekend), then I expect the hysteria to end shortly.

I checked 3 WalMarts in my area last weekend, none had 9mm, or .45. One had some 40S&W, but that was it. None had .223. I know for a fact that several of the local gun stores are buying WalMart ammo, and then selling it for $3-4 more in their gun store (guy in line admitted doing that).
BassPro only had .38sp, .22, and .223 (at .60 per round, UMC 200rnd pack). The clerk stocking .38sp at BassPro said it was crazy, like trying to buy bread/milk before a snow storm.
This is not about a bad economy, it's politics, pure and simple. When you have the most anti-gun people ever, in charge of making new laws, it makes people worry. Both the AG Holder and President want new AWB sometime in the future (but Dems and Pelosi in the House are afraid to even talk about that...they remember 1994). That, and for the last few years states have been trying to pass laws to either encode ammo (18 states in 2008 tried, but failed, with this, and many re-submitted bills in 2009-including in GA; Legislation) or to tax each round sold.
California passed last year and Gov signed a new law which will require only micro-stamping capable pistols to be sold in CA. It takes affect in 2010.

In the Houston,TX area all the WM in my area are sold out of almost everything except a few calibers of hunting ammo.
No 9mm or almost any pistol calibers to be found in my area.

Brickboy240 what part of town do you live on ? Perhaphs we could network and keep each other informed on the ammo situation at the WM's in each others part of town?
I am on the north east side of town (Humble area) and my local WM situation is almost Identical to yours some .22's, 7mmags and a little 12ga birdshot.I have 4 wm's in my immediate area. I need mostly 9mm and .223 and a little .40.
Let me know what you think about this idea?
