For some range/target ammo, esp. Winchester white box 9mm FMJ, I avoid Wal-Mart and go straight to Academy here in Houston. No hassles, no evil eyes, no "got to check with the manager" kind of B.S.
Heck, I'd pay an extra 5-10% just to make sure it wasn't Wal-Mart. What DO they sell that is made in the USofA, by the way. Nothing against the employees, mind you...a job is a job. I refuse to buy "fresh" produce from them, as too much of it is marked as south-of-the-border for country of origin. Why the heck can't we grow our own friggin' food?!
OK, back to AMMO.... Time to plant a garden AND get some reloading equipment. Now that's the way to shut myself up!

Wal-Mart in my area punishes, rather than rewards, bulk purchase of ammo.

Not only do the Walmarts in my area not give a bulk ammo discount, but they also will add in the charge of the tax stamp price if you want to buy it in the sealed bulk boxes. To that add the fact that they don't even give you a stamp for the charge.

becuase we are too busy GIVING away what we grow here. To add insult to injury we give it to people that are ungratefull and would just as soon see the US a wasteland.
But this is another topic of conversation.
Back on topic:
I went to Wal Mart and bought a few hundred rounds of 9mm and a few thousand of .22 and my friend there with me bought a few hundred .45ACP. I was OCing and the guy running the register for me said nothing. The older man standing behind the counter decided he wanted to do the 20 questions as to why I'm carrying a gun and why would I want to, am I police officer, yada, yada, yada......and how he was in vietnam and never wanted to see another firearm in his life. I smiled thanked him for serving and walked out with my arm load of ammo and firearm cleaning supplies.

I would have told him "Yeah, that makes sense: work somewhere that sells ammo in a place that allows OC by its citizens. DUH!"
dumb butt.

This is what I've heard too.
I asked the manager at the one I go to. I told him I was interested in ordering/buying 15000 rounds at once. He would not give me any discount.
At the Walmart I go to I've bought 2000 rounds at a time twice before. Never had any problems, comments or any bad/negative stuff.

I've heard of tax stamps for full auto weapons and silencers but not bulk ammo.

I just bought 10 100 packs at WM yesterday of WWB 9mm, one clerk asked why I keep buying so much ammo, out of curiosity not being pushy/nosy. I told her because the price of ammo keeps going up and up.
