Completely different guns that use the same calibre.

There are numerous manufacturers making each of the styles... come to think of it, I am not sure if anyone still makes sks's but there are lots of surplus SKS's around. I believe most AK's that you find here in the states are formerly full auto rifles that are imported as kits with the reveiver cut in half and the full auto parts missing, and reassembled with semi auto receivers and fire control groups.

SKS is about half the price of an AK.

Depending on which one you're looking at...and i hope you aren't thinking of the 'new' prices...a Wasr is a $200 gun, period...

I prefer the AK over the SKS, I have owned both. I started out with an SKS and had to do the mag well mod to get a 30 round magazine to work and that was cumbersome. When I got rid of that and got my AK, the situation, IMO was much improved.

biggest differences in my opinion is most sks are VERY similar, all are milled, all are 10 rd stripper clip fed.
aks you can get in .223/5.56, nato.308/7.62x51, 5.45x39, 7.62x39 stamped or milled, many different size mags.
I have a norinco sks, and just bought a .223 siaga ak. I would still like to add a 7.62x39 AK but i am in no hurry, i do like my sks very much, its a great gun. Its a shame the sks didnt all come standard with a mag well to take AK47 mags, woulda been fine if they took stripper clips standard, but for fitment and modularity, it would have been awesome if the sks just used standard ak 47 mags and was plug and play. I can dream
If you are in love with the 7.62x39 round it makes the choice a little more difficult about which to choose. If you like any of the other rounds, you have no choice in sks, and the AK wins by default.
