WTF, Mate?

OK....FINALLY got my pistol grip nut, and two 30 round mags. Had my magwell opened up last week...and there's a problem.

Grip nut went on fine, pistol grip looks nice and feels like it's on there real good. But the mags are causing problems. It seems that some part of the bolt is catching on the mags. I can still cycle it, but I've got to put some ass into it. It looks like the bolt is catching on the front-right feed lip of BOTH mags. They are both Tantal's that I got from Cope's.

So...what's the fix for this? Can I just take my dremel to the mags, and live with having to shave a little off all the mags I get? Or am I missing something stupid? Or perhaps when the magwell was opened something else needed to be removed/too much was removed?

Anyone experience this before? It's a WASR 2...

Before you do anything else..try a different mag. I had issues with steel Tantal mags in 3 of my Bulgarian AK-74s....send me a PM with your addy and I'll send you a black 'sanitized' poly Bulgarian AK74 mag (cheap) to try if you can't find one locally.

i had problems with steel mags for my tantal also. i used a dremel and ground down the sides of the mags. i have no problems with bulgarian, east german or russian mags they all fit like a glove. just the steel ones fit real tight. so i never use it lol

Do you mean steel in general, or just polish steel?

That would suck...since I kind of like the look and feel of the steel ones.

But I guess actually working kind of overshadows looks

I compared my single stack mag to the Polish steels...and when I put the mags side by side, with the rear lip that connects to the magazine catch lined up the 30 round is MUCH taller. The bullet sits at the same height in both, but the feed lips on the 30 round are probably a 1/4" taller. The rest of the two magazines line up perfectly.

Is this normal for all 30 round mags? Ir proof that these mags won't work in my AK?

Wait a few days (will ship out monday at the latest) and see how it compares to the Bulgarian. if all the mags (30rd) 'tangs' sit higher than the 10rd, you'll have to file down the mag latch on the gun.

Slight update:

While at my dad's I took his angle grinder to one of the mags (one still remains un-modded). Cycles significantly better, however it still seems hard to cycle with a full mag. The bolt is leaving some nasty scratch marks on the cases, and sometimes bullets. I should have time to take it out for a field test this weekend.

I will await the new mag, Einheit...and thanks again

I'm take the follower out of the bad mag and switch with one from a good mag. It really sounds like the mag latch is setting the mags up too high in the receiver....its on its way....
