Here's what I do:

Completely field strip the rifle so that the barrel, gas tube, piston, bolt, bolt carrier, and recoil spring can all be cleaned.

Soak them in warm water in a large tub for about 10-15 minutes.

Pull out each part and apply a nice layer of solvent/cleaner and scrub that ish with a toothbrush like crazy. Rinse with clean water from the faucet every so often to be sure it's all clean-like. Dry each part with several clean towels until no more black shows up on the towel.

I then put a generous amount of oil on my finger and rug it over all the parts that rub each other, and make sure I've covered the entire part. I then gently wipe it down, so as not to remove all the oil, but to take away any extra that I put.

Reassemble.

If I shot a ton of ammo that day, I'll also disassemble the magazines and clean them.

I've been using that system on my Saiga for many months and it's still in beautiful shape.

What I do:
1. field strip as normal
2. put the gas tube, muzzle brake (remove it first from the barrel), bolt, bolt carrier in a plastic container
3. boil a pot of water
4. Pour the pot of water into plastic container through the barrel, gas block and chamber of your gun. (This essentially cleans your chamber and barrel)
5. Take the AK out of the plastic container, watch it self dry in seconds as the metal is HOT
6. Take all the components out, bolt carrier, muzzle brake and gas tube will self dry in seconds.
7. I apply some hot air to bolt (since I can't check the internals to verify that it has indeed dried) using hair dryer.
8. Clean as normal, I take care to apply gun oil (from aerosol can) through the gas tube so that the inside of gas tube gets a coat of oil.

TAkes about an hour total.
