My AK w/ fresh Moly Resin & EOTech

Pics of my SAR-1. Finished sandblasting and a fresh coat of Black Satin Moly Resin.

SAW Pistol Grip

I think the EoTech looks a little out of place on top of the receiver, but I wanted to keep the traditional look of wood furniture

All that's left is to thread the barrel for a birdcage...I can't quite work up the nerve, especiallly since the color job is already done

Sweet!
Now take an old piece of chain to it and give it some character

Seriously, what did you finish the wood with ??

How difficult is it to use the moly resin stuff?? Can you give a brief rundown on the process of using that??

I actually didn't refinish the wood, it arrived in really good condition. All I did was take some "No Sand" and a microfiber cloth to it to buff it up a little.

Once you do it once or twice, it's easy as pie. It's easy the first time, but nerve-wracking since you don't want to ruin a perfectly good firearm.

Rundown as follows:

1. Degrease (gunscrubber, break-cleaner, etc)
2. Sandblast (not always necessary, depends on the firearm) Sometimes I've just used 2000grit sandpaper to rough the area up. I did my XD slide and didn't do anything except degrease.
3. Degrease again if sandblasted
4. Preheat (not always necessary, depends on the desired finish 'glossy' or 'flat)
5. Airbrush (get familiar with your airbrush and compressor before hand. If you've never used one, get used to the pattern and the adjustability of pressure. I made the mjstake of doing it in the garage and my compressor overheated for like 20 minutes.
Don't overcoat, most isn't better. It goes on in just a few
thousands of an inch thick so you don't get metal on metal
wear. No need to put it on thick
6. Bake (bake in oven {i used the kitchen stove} at 300 degrees for 1 hour)
7. Let cool and enjoy

I've been doing color jobs for a few years now and love Moly Resin the most. There is nothing to mix (unlike DuraCoat) and you get self lubricating properties with it. Keep it in the fridge and it lasts for years!!

Good info, thank you for sharing. I have been getting into refinishing firearms lately and would love to try the moly resin out.

One question for you....... does it stink up the oven when you bake it?? I only have my kitchen oven and don't want to get my ass kicked for stinking up the house.

It is mildly smelly for the hour it bakes and maybe another 30 minutes after it's done. Then the smell goes away.
It's not really strong, almost like if you painted one side of your house, but were sitting in the other, nonpainted side.

I open a window by the oven and turn on the overhead vent fan and it keeps the smell to a minimum
