AK or SKS?
Having a hard time deciding between the two and was hoping to get some input. I plan to use to use it as a fun gun and as a secondary HD. Hunting, which is a very rare occurrence for me, would also be a nice option. What do you folks suggest? Budget wise...I would love to spend between $200-$400 if possible.

Well, In your price range you can either get a top of the line SKS or a bottom of the line AK. That along with your intended use of the gun, would lead me to say get a nice SKS.

With your budget you could get a NICE RUSSIAN sks.Next IMO would be a Norinco(chinese). But if you can find an Ak clone within your price range BUY IT.Probably will be a Romanin, but they do go BANG everytime,I have 2 of them.Only reason i say buy an AK is cause of the Hicap maps, sks is 10 rd,they make Hicaps for the sks but very UNrealiable.Just my 2cts....

For $400 you could buy a brand new Saiga rifle, buy all the conversion parts, have a lot of fun with a really rewarding project and still have enough left over for a couple boxes of ammo. You end up with a brand new AK-47, but you do have to have average mechanical ability and a dremel, hand drill or drill press.

Yup, go with the Saiga. even if you choose to leave it stock you have an SKS priced gun that is far superior.
Here's mine.

They're both cheap enough that you can have one of each for the same price of your average AR-15.
But don't get an SKS without the chrome-lined barrel. If you don't have a chrome-lined barrel, that rifle is worthless.

The vast majority of 7.62commie rounds you'll ever find are dirty, dirty, DIRTY x 10^8924759357.
So if you're shooting a gun chambered in that caliber, you should just pony up and pay the $70 difference for a not-Yugo SKS.
