How much time do I have?
Assuming that assault rifles will be banned once we have a new president, can someone give me an estimate of how long I have to legally purchase an AK?

At least until January, 20th or 21...when the new Prez takes the oath...I would imagine it'll take the anti's a month or so to ramp up to attack mode and get legislation to the traitors.

Regardless of when an actual ban takes place, expect prices to jump dramatically the day after a Democrat wins the White House in anticipation of a future ban. I'm going to try to get mine before Election Day just to be on the safe side.

Same here. We are trying to save every penny we can to buy a house and even my wife said that if it looks like Comrade Obama is going to win, I am getting an AK and mags for it and the AR.

I'm in agreement with June or July before legislation is passed. I also don't anticipate an outright ban, but severe restrictions. To do more will require a year or two to get through committee, be voted on, and signed into law.
Then again, it does seem like the only things that ever happens efficiently are the things that restrict us and happen in the middle of the night. So I could be way off. S. 2433 anyone With that said ... I gotta agree with Dan ... If a Democrat wins the White House ... Prices will go up the day after the results are announced. Buy now!

The whole point of being in business is to make money. If a retailer / seller paid $400 for a gun, and they can reasonably foresee something that will increase prices (changes in either supply or demand) , the intelligent thing to do is raise prices as soon as possible. I'd guess September. 2008. To the OP - Don't overlook buying a receiver flat and build kit, and "rolling your own." The receiver flats are the "gun" and are selling for $10-15 now. Kits (if you can find them) are $200ish. While a good bit more complex than building your own AR, building a gun is much more fun / satisfying than buying a gun. And when you build your own, it has no serial number (completely legal) Get the parts now, build it whenever. Stock up on cheap mags now too. |

Buy now, and get all the AK ammo you can. I can see the possibility of 7.62 Soviet ammo going down, as we will no longer be involved in Iraq, so will no longer be supplying them the ammo, but I think it's more likely prices will go up.

So I could build my own AK for $250? Where should I look to get this kit and receiver flat?

Not anymore. A year ago yes... a few months ago possibly... Now no way can you build a kit for $250 unless you find someone getting rid of a kit cheap. Being that most places are sold out of rommy g kits you may be out of luck. Dont forget all the tooling involved to build an ak. I built all of my jigs and had most of the tools. If you dont have all the tools or jigs and cant find a local build party you will be looking at a few hundred in tools and jigs. The difference between building an ak and an ar is an ar is a paint by numbers kit, an ak is like making all your own paint and no numbers or lines to make your painting pretty.
