?'s about Yugo..

I just bought a Yugo fixed and had a few questions.

1. Because the barrel isn't chrome-lined, how many rounds can I expect it to withstand?

2. Because it isn't chrome-lined, will I have to run home and clean it or is the ammo produced today non-corrosive?

3. Can the same products used to clean my XD be used to clean the AK (plus something to clean the bore)?

I guess I don't want to baby it if I don't have to. Not that I will treat it like crap, I would just like the peace of mind knowing that if I am too busy to clean it or shoot a lot of rounds through it, it won't fail me in any way.

More than you'll ever put through it.

Nope, just clean it as one normally cleans a barrel and you ought to be fine. Most newly produced x39 ammo is non-corrosive

Yep, sure can.

We're talking about an AK here right? You CAN neglect cleaning it, treat it like crap, and shoot thousands of rounds through it and I don't think you'll see many adverse effects.

Exactly what he said.

Just a piece of info for ya...Russia wouldn't sell chrome (chromium) to Yugoslavia while they were building AKs. Yugo doesn't have a natural supply so they overbuilt the barrel to compensate for the non-chrome lining. This is why their barrels are significantly larger than "standard" ak barrels.

1. the barrel life is only 20,000-30,000 rounds..on full auto. You won't build up the same heat with a semi. Chupa nailed it-if its in half way decent shape, it'll take more rounds than you'll put through it. Chrome lining is just for heat protection (makes a super smooth layer for the copper jacket to rundown and fills all the pores and pits from machining) and offers more corrosion resistance than bare steel.

2. You should keep a small container of cleanser in your kit, Windex with ammonia works great for this. Just get it good and clean before you oil it up. (use lots of oil too, it will rust if left unprotected, or exposed to humidity) By eyeball it looks like 'freckles' in the grooves.

3. You can clean it with whatever you want, I grease my non chromed barrels if I'm not gonna be shooting for a while. Most of your attention during cleaning should be at the chamber and bolt face/firing pin hole. And don't forget the gas piston every 3k-4k rounds.....

Or in a time of war... a greased rag may be run down the barrel and left in it with the bolt closed on it and a little sticking out the muzzle, then wrap the whole show in burlap... as a friend of mine found buried in a barn in Kosovo in years past.

Instead of making a new thread, I'll just ask in this one.

Is there any way to smooth out the action of my charging handle? Neither the pull nor release are very smooth.

Thanks in advance
