Is there any way to smooth out the action of my charging handle? Neither the pull nor release are very smooth.

polish the grooves in the bolt carrier, the 'ramp' on the bottom of the carrier, the bolt 'sleeve' and the bolt 'guide' in the bolt carrier. You can also smooth the rails in the receiver and refinish them. These are good things to do anyway, but at least polish the FCG at all contact points, and especially the hammer face.
