AK-47 has more stopping & penetration power

AR-15 is more accurate past 400 yards

AK-47 is more reliable (the elements don't affect it all)

AR-15 has peep sights (better sight picture)

AK-47 can penetrate 8 inches of solid wood

AR-15 can not penetrate 8 inches of solid wood

AK-47 is more intimidating

You pick.

I was never that interested in an AK, got myself an AR and off I went to the range, happy as can be. Then I start looking at AK's, oh crap, these are pretty cool, fun to shoot, cheaper ammo, of course they look mean and nasty and are a blast to field strip! I sit at the kitchen table, take the AK apart, put it back together, take it apart, back together, on and on this goes....My wife thinks I'm playing with the AK more than with her! Guess that's the only issue I've had with my AK....ha

eh, mostly a win-win. When your enemy is hiding behind a double-thick brick wall you're gonna wish you got the AK.

Agreed, well actually when you think about it . . . any gun in general would send liberals running for the hills! LOL I bet if I whipped out my pellet gun they'd pee their pants and run!

The AKs are ugly?... this is news to me.

To me, the AK epitomizes everything a modern firearm should be: Reliable, easy to use, easy to maintain, easy for the average soldier to carry and wield.

Edit:
And I think it's purdy

The challenges I have with my Ak are this.

The ergos blow, safety and mag changes, try changing mags being prone you'll see real quick what I mean. The sights have a lot to be desired, I can hit clay pigeons as far back as I can see them about 75 yards.

The problem I have is this, the AK 7.62 JHP round punches through small game and they keep running. I've shot multiple rabbits and yotes and they keep on running. First time it happened I couldn't believe it and thought I had missed. Never found the first rabbit following the blood trail and the yote was a good mile out from where I shot it and needed another shot to put down. I've stopped hunting with the AK and it sits in the safe.

With the AR they are all one stop shots up to including turning stuff inside out if you wish. As the targets get larger the 7.62 round starts to shine and the 5.56/223 starts to dim with neither caliber being a panacea. I lean more toward a 1/7 twist barrel for the AR with 62+ gr ammo for anything within 400 yards. It's a universal round from long pig to ground squirels.

For SHFT AK is a good choice for price / performance; but when SHFT my AK will sit and the AR's will take front stage. All local law enforcement and military currently uses 5.56/223 so parts / ammo may be available. Unless you stock piled a few thousand rounds you may be SOL.

I don't feel out gunned carrying the AK, I think the AR is better in a lot of ways IMO.

I'm disappointed that this thread could go a whole page without saying WOLVERINES!
