The reasons why I decided to buy an AK variant instead of an AR:
- Ammo is abundant.
- A parakeet with downs could operate it.
- The rifle is inexpensive
- Accessories and replacement parts are abundant and cheap
- Known for ridiculous reliability
- A guy wanted to sell his WASR10 at the right time and place
- WOLVERINES! (of course)

Reasons why that was a tough decision:
- AR controls are simpler and more user friendly (the safety lever's less girthy and awkward to get to, the charging handle's not clear over on the other side of the rifle)
- I don't like Commies

Now I figure my next uhsawlt weppin is going to be an XCR.

Here it comes

Okay first let me say I DO NOT own an AK, I have fired one on several trips to the range, along with a saiga. I do own an AR and love the weapon. I personally found the AK to be uncomfortable, I can shoot my AR in any of the 6 positions comfortably but the AK seemed too short to me. Also I found the controls to be very akward (I know i am used to my AR and that is probably why). Having said that I do still have plans of getting an AK, precisely for the reasons everone here has mentioned. Durability and power.

For me it was a combination of things - to me, the 223 is a varmint cartridge, I've had fun with my Ar's and Sig 556 but I don't have much confidence in the chambering. I like the meaty bullets that exit from my AK I also like the inexpensive ammo and the perfect reliability of my AK. If If need tackdriving accuracy I'll use my bolt gun instead of a combat gun. BTW my AK is plenty accurate for my needs. The current availability of the AK is on the decline, the high quality Arsenal guns are going up in price and the cheap AK's are getting tougher to find. The AR? everyone has one but I've seen some good deals on used guns as of late - ammo costs are taking their toll. Regardless of ammo/chambering, you can't go wrong with either - but I'd go AK right now.

AK's are cheap and unbreakable. .223 ammo is getting more expensive because of the war on terror and an AK is just the ultimate "assault rifle" (to coin the liberals).

I'm saving up for one now....i have my eye on a yugo model. i need to put a deposit down on it.

for a carbine set up that would be used for SHTF and just messing around i say the ak wins
due to cheaper gun and ammo and reliability

well i wanted a hi-cap semi auto that was capable of dilivering rapid ACCURATE shots at a mid/long distance 300-600 yards with low recoil. In my current situation i will gladly give up a little reliability to get some extra accuracy, since i take VERY good care of my guns and only shoot my ar --at the range and up in the hills. but not really for hunting except for whistle pigs but 100% reliability isnt that important. I built this gun so there were a few bugs to work out but once it broke in it has been 100% with magpul pmags

i also dont like wood on guns unless its a laminate stock that is colorful
and i know ak47s can come with synthetic stocks just not that many of them

also i just like the solid feel of the ar15 and its a nice clean look also where as the aks i have handled and shot are a lot more loose and dont have the nice clean look of the ar

and the BC of the 68+ grain .223 bullets are better then most if not all the 7.62 rounds

You expect to shoot a lot at 300-600 yards? Everybody has their preference, which is fine, but when I think of most circumstances where I'd have to pull out the EBR in anger 30-60 yards with a red-dot or holo site is probably more realistic. *shrug* To each his own.

As for the stocks, you can get black poly sets for AK's; many even come with them now due to the current fixation with tacti-cool black stuff.
