I've been buying from Cabela's for the last 20 years. However, I have stopped doing so about a year ago. When I was buying from them their prices were high, of course, but they had a great return policy. The stuff I was buying from them was hunting gear and clothing, some black powder.

Anyway, about a year or so ago Cabela's opened up a local retail out let in my area (4 miles from me). My step-mother was on the city council and was able to get me in on the pre-grand opening day (she had tickets). I went down there and was blown away with what I saw. It was the biggest hunting/fishing outlet I have ever seen. When I was there I of course browsed their gun section and was disappointed in the high prices. Also, Cabela's didn't have all of their items they carried in on-line catalogue.

I received a $75 gift card for my last birthday for Cabela's. So, I went down there a few weeks ago and ended pretty discouraged. There stuff is so over priced I felt like I was wasting my gift card. I then decided to try and use it with their on-line catalogue. I figured I could use more 7.62x39, which their local outlet was not carrying and has not for at least 6 months now. I found out that they had an on-line sale on the Wolf (black box) 7.62x39. They wanted $229 for 1000 rounds, which is regularly $249. So, I figured I would burn the gift card. When I went through the on-line check process they added sales tax. I called them and they said since there is a local retail outlet to you we must charge sales tax. The total price on the order came to about $265. I decided to wait to purchase anything from them and my gift card is collecting dust.

I'm glad I waited on the ammo. I ended up paying $175 out the door for Wolf black box 7.62x39 at a local gunshow, bought two cases.

Also, I checked out the price on a XD45 Service Model. They wanted $559 for it. My local dealer stocks them for $479.

Ya, I was down there yesterday to for there "big gunshow". It was a joke. It was just the same stuff and no special pricing.

Thanks, Rocket6R

If you think Cabelas is bad, you should try Grander Mountian.

I visted Grander Mountian for the first and last time just a few days ago.

Bass pro isn't much better. They opened a Bass pro "outdoor world" near home out of an old shopping mall, the place is huge, but everyhting is way overpriced. After browsing there, I honestly thought Gander mountain was low compared to that place.

They had a Walther G22 in carbon fiber. Couldnt find them anywhere at the time so I asked the guy about it and it was $50 cheaper than I had been seeing the regular models for. Had to get it. While back they had the XD45 for $420. Almost bought a second one. You can find good prices every once in a while. But yeah their pricey.

At my local Gander Mountian, the regular prices are high. I go there every once in a while, and once in a while, I find a good deal.

I got my XD SC 9mm from there for $329. Brand new in box (before they included the "kit")

Another point is that on-line retailers are required to collect sales tax on on-line orders *if* they have a physical point-of-presence in a particular state. For instance, when I usta live in Louisiana, I ordered some stuff from Dell for my Mom as she lived in Tennessee, where Dell has 3 or 4 retail kiosks, thus she had to pay sales tax on any on-line orders. Louisiana had none, thus I was not charged sales tax for on-line orders through Dell.
