Barrel pin is now out. I borrowed an air hammer, hooked it up to my small compressor and got the pin out in less than a minute. It's amazing what the right tool for the job can do. I smacked the snot out that pin and it didn't budge. I leaned into the air hammer and nailed it with one shot and it started moving.

If you can't drive it out, drill it out. Also, if you can get the old rivets cleaned out, you can let them flatten out against the barrel-you will not have to remove the barrel then. I've done this twice and all is still well with them well over 5,000rds.

Just FYI - I called Military Gun Supply today and told them about the broken stock. And their guy was easy to work and is getting out replacement to me today.

I kknow your wood problem is fixed, but a lot of them crack, especially for people who try to install an UltiMak into them.
Gorilla Glue is amazing stuff and can usually save your old wood AK furniture. Just for future endeavors

Quick Update - 4/24
I've completely demilled the kit. All rivets are out. Barrel pin is out. And the barrel is out.
Since I opted for a screw build, I've tapped all the trunnion holes now. And we received our flats from Tapco, along with their G2 double hook trigger kits. We made a fixture for bending the flats using 6 bolts. And we have now bent the flats. They came out pretty good. The first one is not the best and we made some fixture adjustments. But the next few came out pretty good. Now I'm "fine tuning" the receiver to fit the trunnions better. Tapco left extra material on the top rails, approximately 0.040 more than the demilled receiver. That made the receiver so it would not fasten flat against the trunnions. But I scribe marks with the calipers and went to work with a dremel. And the rails now appear to fit well into the rear trunnion slots. Also the holes on the receiver are slightly under sized for the #10-32 screws. So I had to drill them out a little (very little). I've got a nice fit on the rear trunnion now. This weekend I plan to do the same for the front trunnion. And then fit check everything. I did a quick fit check with the receiver before mods and everything looked close. But the next fit check will be with the trigger installed, the selector, etc. Once I get everything looking good from a fit check, I plan to move forward with reinstalling the barrel. My buddy is slightly ahead of me on one of his kits and already reinstalled his barrel. No fancy tools. He stuck the barrel in a freezer overnight and got installed pretty well. He learned one lesson and forgot to put the barrel pin in the freezer too. But it wasn't too bad to install. After the fit check, I will begin the process of heat treating the receiver holes and the rails. |

Well I've now got a nice fit on the front trunnion too. But I encountered a problem. I did a fit check with a few magazines and they all behaved the same. The hook into the trunnion and as the back edge slides up toward the mag catch, the mag ramp contacts the mag well before the magazine engages into the catch. So I guess I have 2 choices - either the holes are slightly off on the location of the trunnion and they need to move more forward (guessing ~0.020) or I need to open up the mag well on the back side. Not sure which yet.
Any advice from the expert builders? For now, I need to assemble the other parts and see if there are any other issues. |

Well I took a little off the back edge of the mag well and that was enough to get the mag down. It is extremely tight into the mag catch. I may want to open the trigger guard / mag catch holes slight (screw build) and shift the assembly back a little...we're talking just a few thousandths. I like the nice snug fit with no slop...but it's so tight you really have to work to get the mags out. And I'm concerned that the variance from mag to mag might cause some to fit & others to not fit. I tried 4 Romanian mags and they all fit the same...extremely tight & not easy to get them out. Hopefully I'll get some pics posted over the weekend.
