Mil surplus is what i shoot.
I had purchased 630 rds of 80's-90's Yugo brass surplus with corrosive primers, 124gr FMJs for stupid cheap. like $.20/cartridge. every single one of them went bang.
so i bought an entire case this last time. 1260rds of 124gr. FMJ 7,62x39 brass case. shoots great.
This next time i'm likely to get something in a steel case and the brass case stuff is in pretty low supply. might even be gone by summer. probably Tula or Wolf. i'd shoot either.
But for now i'm set for a while. wont have to make the decision for a while.

ammoman.com has good prices. i've bought a couple of 1260 cases from them for about $0.22 a round. they have some decent deals on steal cased russian ammo, and their prices include shipping.

Why?? I do it all the time and even mix it up in the mag. polish the chamber and all will be well.

If you don't mind corrosive and can find it - some left over surplus in spam cans is still good to go.
I prefer the Barnaul family (Brown Bear, Silver Bear etc.). I've heard fantastic stuff about Gold(en?) Tiger, but rarely see it.
In 74 ammo, the Wolf shoots less consistent, dirtier, and a bit less accurate than all of my Silver Bear ammo, for the same cost. I wouldn't hesitate the shoot Wolf, but Silver Bear has been better for me - at the same cost.
Your gun will likely eat anything you shoot through it. For zeroing purposes I'll use Hornady 5.45, it is a bit more precise/consistent...though it shoots a little less hot than Silver Bear sometimes.

thats retarded. You 'zero' a weapon with what you shoot out of it, never some other thing you occasionally use. I've shot the Hornaday, its made for an AR, not an AK and between it and Silver Bear or Bulgarian surplus, they all print about the same. I have noticed a little more deviation from the Hornaday but not much. I will blame it on the brass case stretch since it fits with more clearance than the Russian steel. i also get a slightly more dirty chamber with it too.
