what type of ak do you have? Hope its accurate enough to do this.
Yeah heaviest lead tip. Find out your states magazine capacity many have a 5 round limit, I just gave a friend a 5 rd mag for his ak so he can go hunting with it. Go to the range as others said and figure out how far its good for. Don't hit a deer with a bad hit at 250 yards, it won't die right away and thats evil.

Furthest I trust my AK on deer is 100 yards. 125 max. I tested out various soft points/hunting designed rounds and chose Cor-Bon 150gr. SP. I can get these repeatedly in a 3 inch target at 100 yards with a standard iron sight. The more common Wolf SP stuff was second best for me. I'm sure in a SKS platform I could extend these ranges a little. Like others have said, the x39 is plenty potent enough to take deer within its limits. |

Whatever you intend to shoot with, take it to the range and tack up an 8" target. That is about the size of a deer's kill zone. Find the maximum range that you can consistently hit that target. That is your limit for taking a shot.
An AK's accuracy is a more limiting factor than the range of the round.

Keep in mind that the #1 deer-pouching round is 22LR (true even with MI’s larger whitetails)… I’d have ZERO problems with a 122-grain FMJ round fired from a 7.62x39mm. (Just like I'd have ZERO problems with a 55-grain FMJ round fired from a 5.56x45mm.)

I had a friend who would use a 223 and had no problems.
