Saiga complete...

Well it's not complete, but the drilling, cutting and cursing are done with. It really was not as bad as I thought it out to be. I did break two taps while installing the bullet guide. I still need to take it apart to reinstall the BHO and paint the receiver. I also want to change the fore grip to more of the ak103 style. But for now here she is, think I'll name her Xenia.

Do yourself a favor and throw the BHO away.

60 million Kalashnikovs haven't needed one.

They're only on the Saigas to add importation points (i.e. "sporting guns have bolt hold opens").

Looks good. That is about the same thing I'm going to do with mine. My parts should be here very soon!

What videos/instructions did you use?

The prices do keep coming down on these guns. I am just glad I didn't run out and buy a Saiga or an AK when they were twice the price they are now. Though I do wish I had bought one when they much lower than they are now.

This is coming from someone (me) who paid $23.95 for Magpul windowed 30 rnd mags that you can now get for much less.

Oh well, Live and learn!

I keep going back and forth about the AK handguard on mine. It's not worth the hassle to me to press off the front sight, and the bolt-on retainer is like $85, so for now mine is stock too.

I like the Surefire rail but I don't know if I'd even want accessories on mine. It's a fat pig as it is.

Anyone know what a loaded Saiga w/mag weighs offhand? Something like 8 or 9 lbs or so for the 7.62 I'm guessing, and the 5.56 will weigh more than that.

Thanks, I had fun doing the conversion. Yeah, the stock hand guard needs to go, I really like the one on the Ak 103. I think I'll end up getting the bolt on retainer from Danzig at some point. Not going to do anything right now as my AR upper arrives Thursday, and it depends what rifle I would rather spend some money on. Below are about the only two guide/videos I used during the conversion. I thought the video was great!

Listen to Nalioth! That BHO will drive you nuts getting it back in - that is unless you have really tiny fingers and an extra hand. It isn't worth it. I have never missed it even though I come from using rifles with them. I got over it.

OK, maybe I'll leave the BHO out, I dunno yet. A couple of tips I could have used.
If you use the classic pistol grip like I did, you will need some sort of washer to go on the bolt at the bottom of the grip. My grip, bolt and nut didn't come with one for some reason. But it's the only way to get it on really tight. The tap that comes the Danzig bullet guide was a POS compared to the one I had to buy at Lowes. I went up one size to a 8-32 tap that came with a bit. The tap didn't flex at all like the ones that broke in thr trunion.
